Fender Bassman 500 Head

I kinda fell in love with my bassman 500 again after finally getting a new 410 cab to match! I forgot how good the gain channel blended with the clean bottom sounds!

I'm honestly thinking of selling my beloved Ampeg rigs to get a super bassman head and 810 cab! I have not been able to reproduce the thick gain that the 500 has, so I'm thinking an all tube version has to be killer!

In my experience, the 810 cab is really nice, but the 610 neo might be my fav of the fender 10 loaded neos. I think the speakers are similar, but the design seems to have a touch more roundness- has that "big cab" sound, but very convenient form factor.

The Super Bassman IS awesome. SO SO thick. Amazing . I wanted a SVT-VR . ..got this instead. ..am happier . Sounds better and is lighter.

Thanks guys...I'll look into the 610 as well...I'm actually selling two Ampeg 610 cabs to fund my new Fender cab. I was thinking 810 gets the speakers a little higher to my ears (looks cool as well) or possibly another 410 and stack with the one I have already. I'm super excited about the super bassman, I've been using 2 Ampeg v4b...great amp but I can't get that thick distortion like the fender and getting tired of moving double rigs when needed. So I figure ill condense my two rig Ampeg rigs and get one setup that can do all.

My new to me (it's secondhand) Bassman 500 head arrived yesterday. After an initial freak out due to lower than expected volume (I only got to play with it for 15 minutes before I went to work), I have now dialed in the settings better and it's definitely going to be very loud.
I noticed, though, that I'm getting a slight volume drop/rise in the overdrive channel. Like it's normal volume for 3 minutes, then drops to slightly lower volume for 3 minutes, then back up to normal volume for 3 minutes, and so on.
I am playing it at bedroom volume, with the OD channel at 4 and the master at 2.
Hopefully when I get it in a band situation and crank it up it'll be fine.
Anyone else had, or heard of, this sort of thing?
Tube?

My Super Bassman was doing this a little when I first got it. Replaced the Fender speaker cable that it came with, and haven't had a problem since.

Hey rodl2005.
Yeah, I've been doing a bit of googling around and found a few 12ax7's not too far from me.
I just got a new Klotz speaker lead with Neutrik connectors, so if that doesn't fix the problem then I'll try some new tubes.
I'm leaning towards a couple of Electro Harmonix ones, but there's a few brands about the same price point.
:)

Haha! Yeah, Russia seems to be the tube capital of the world.
I just had a 30 minute jam on my rig with the new speaker cable, and NO volume fluctuations at all. So I'm pretty happy about that!!! I guess the other cable couldn't handle the load or something.
I'll probably still get new tubes anyway.

Tis nice to have a couple spare. Might give ya different flavours of the baked in tone.
I got a smoother overdrive when I swapped pre tube in V1 & V2 in my Super Bassman .
Same front end in yours, so. .... can be fun swapping and listening to see if any difference . .... sometimes good, sometimes not, sometimes no difference.
Glad the probs worked out.
Take a spare speaker lead to gigs too. that's my motto . ... take a spare of pretty much everything.
