Fender Custom Shop Club

So one day a customer is told to get their “parts” from Stew Mac and a few days later we have this situation. :woot:

What dealer did you purchase this Bass from? I’d be getting a total refund right now.

What EXACTLY did you order that’s making your Bass worth $6,000 ? :woot:

Sweetwater. They have been great with me until this day… seriously - giving me a 6 month delay on the day of delivery is bad!

I have postmodern P so I created my design of a postmodern J. Similar in specs to the P just a J.. (string through, modern neck heal, binding, relic etc)
The Bass you see in my post above is my Cunetto….Relic. Has your dealer told you that you can’t get a refund? Has your dealer just changed ownership? Yup. I’m a very calm guy….but you have a ton of options. I’d get my money refunded, find a different dealer and a different Manufacturer  You’ll be a happy bass player again.

this might sound stupid but I wasn’t sure a refund was even possible. I will talk with them tomorrow. When I talked to the rep he said the only option is to “wait it out”.
There is actually a bass very close to what I want at musiciansfriend.. in stock… just not thrilled to deal with them.

funny thing is I was also toying around with a design for a masterbuilt instrument…

“Business” is always interesting . A “customer” is most often timid and will back off at the first mention of the word “No”. While not trying to sound like a pompous ass I suggest you keep in mind that someone has YOUR $6,000…. plus interest. You, on the other hand, have nothing but a string of broken promises. If I may, there are about a dozen “Independent Dealers” which have Sterling Reputations and will remember your name when you call ☎️ and aren’t totally ruled by ANY Manufacturer. Where you find MAPP pricing and Huge Chain Stores you find Used Car Dealers. A bit of homework will make you a most happy bassist indeed. Never take No for an answer.

Etaym sorry to hear about the situation. It sounds like the main issue is communication. When I order my custom shop bass they said around 12-18 months. No specific date given. So I mentally prepared for flexibility. Delays in custom builds is common for individual shops and large companies so while the 6 month delay sucks it happens.

the part where they said they could not change the pickups due to where it was at in the build and then reported the delay is the part I would be upset about.

You can either emotionally forgive them for having bad communication, ask that with the delay you want them to do the pickup change, and enjoy the bass when it comes or try to cancel the order.

Remember some of this is just an employee gets the email from the rep. To change the pickup Looks up the date of your build and the policy for the cut off date for when changes can be made. That employee may not really know where things are at with different builds. They are not trying to lie to you. They are just looking at a spreadsheet and saying yes or sorry no.

FYI, Sounds like a cool build.

Mira weird because communication from sweetwater was good. What made me so mad is the pickup situation and the fact that SW told me we are on track for September just last month. Now, on the day the bass is supposed to be shipped they tell me of a 6 month delay. This is not something that has been unknown to this morning!
I was in customer service and one of the first things I was told was to over communicate, especially if there are problems…

As these Discussions have the potential of getting incredibly weird very quickly I’ll offer this and then retire from the situation.
The most frustrating thing about the “names” used on the web is that very few use their actual names. Google “Joe Bananas” and you never actually find anything.

When in doubt who’s giving you advice I strongly suggest Google. Some in this and many threads have no idea how the industry actually works. . Rich Briere.

Cool, so I’m assuming you mean neck binding like a 66? That will look sweet. What pickup are you looking for?

- hey Chad, a notification popped up that we need that custom bass shipped today.
- what custom bass?
- order xx12345
- don't have one like this.
- ok, let's call Fender CS.

- hey Fender CS, have you sent us that custom bass, order xx12345?
- what order? Never got an order like this.
- riiiight. Now what do we tell the customer...

Very interesting. I just ordered a CS build through Sweetwater (this will be my second one that I've ordered to my specs through them) back in early July. They gave me a lead time of 12mos. I was looking at doing a Vincent Van Trigt Masterbuilt and got it quoted...with a lead time of 4-5 years!! Woah! I opted to do a Teambuilt to my specs which turns out, is going to be partially built by Master Builder Dennis Galuszka. :)

The previous CS build I ordered through them was in late August 2019. It was a Teambuilt 1968 Jazz Bass Relic but with some custom appointments. They gave me a lead time of 9 months. The bass was completed and shipped to me in just 6 months. However, I don't think that will be the case with my current order because of the worldwide supply chain issues and am almost expecting delays.

Sweetwater has always been great for me and I've been doing business with them and the same sales engineer for 15 years now. Sorry to hear you're having issues.

I think the service from SW was great, that’s the reason I started working with them. I was very surprised and upset to get the update literally the week the bass was supposed to arrive, and it’s either the CS or SW who neglected to update me (despite them saying they are on track as late as August!). Super disappointing for me but I hope yours works out!

Yeah, I can totally understand your frustration! I would be too if I was expecting something to be shipped and then told I have to wait another 5 to 6 months. Someone definitely dropped the ball with the communication....
