Fender Custom Shop Club

If SW or the CS provided our fellow TB'er a good explanation for how this excessive delay occurred on the eve of shipping, there would be no need to speculate.

SW told me the CS said they are short handed due to the pandemic.

just to close the issue so we can all go back to enjoying CS pictures, I am fine with that explanation - if it was provided two months ago and not the week I was supposed to receive the bass… I was (and to some degree still an) in customer service - first thing I was thought was to over communicate, especially if there are problems. They (CS or SW) couldn’t have found out the bass was delayed so late in the process, now I am furious and don’t trust them - I don’t believe them now when they say I will get it Feb…
I even said to the rep “fine let’s do feb if you are willing to sign a contract stating I get double the cost of the bass back if you don’t deliver” obviously he did not agree.

isn’t it weird how there is no penalty clause on orders?? I mean, I would never let a contractor come into my house for a box fix without setting dates and terms. O well. I hope everyone here has better future experiences. Maybe in the future I will try someday with a different dealer and after all this is over, for now I am sticking with in stock products.

Any long term opinions on Sean Hurley P bass? Would you chose it over Pino, which definetely has some magic to me? Or is it just another nice CS, only with mute added?

Would appreciate any comments, surprisingly little user info about this one.

Never played one but it probably depends on whether you want the mute feature on the bridge.

I don't have experience with either one, so just a thought. Doesn't the Pino have a different/special pup? I believe it also comes with TI Flats (I love them!), so those things would make a difference.

I don't have experience with the Sean Hurley model but I've owned a Pino since 2013. It's unlike any P I've ever played and is my #1. The pickup is "custom wound", but I don't know to what specs. And it did come with TI Flats (JF344's which are the only flats I use) that are still on the bass. It just has this feel and sound....like the FCS used some sort or sorcery or magic dust when it was built. I'll never get rid of it. :-)

I was looking at doing a Vincent Van Trigt Masterbuilt and got it quoted...with a lead time of 4-5 years!!

:wideyed:

Do you think there are people who would still go ahead and place an order with a lead time like that (and with all the uncertainty around at present, that's probably an optimistic estimate)?

I know that since arriving on the scene Vincent's reputation has skyrocketed given he produces some VERY nice pieces, as well as rather interesting ones. I'm wondering how much of his backlog consists of basses, or whether he has been inundated with orders for MB Strats and Teles?

It's really hard to say. I'm friends with Vince and even that couldn't get me further up in the line of his "backlog" lol! I'm sure there are still people that would place an order with a lead time like that....just not me, haha! He has become THE bass guy for FCS Masterbuilt, but he still does plenty of Strats and Teles too.

That's a good friend to have! Wow! I assume there must be some real heavyweights in the music industry waiting in line for them then....the publicity acquired through doing custom work for prominent celebs like Jason Momoa always helps too, I guess! :D

Vince's Instagram page with all his builds is a veritable feast of eye AND ear candy! I never get tired of perusing that!

I bought a used one last year from CME. It's a good one. Light and pup sounds good. It played fine, and I had it plek'd as well. It plays and sounds the best out of all of the three straight p's I have. I'm happy with it, but even at a used price it was expensive. Seems like a special one to me. How much is reality and how much is it because of buyer self-bias and being an admitted Sean Hurley fan? Hard to say, I'm in my own head and cant see from the outside. Problem with rare birds is that you don't often get a chance to play it first and compare it head to head with a baseline (pun intended) bass that you already know. I happened to be in Chicago before the pandemic and went to CME in person (way cool store) and played a pre-cbs white p, expecting magic and frankly, was underwhelmed. I kept an eye on it on their website and it was listed for at least a year after that. I didn't get to play it in person first, but if my SH bass had been meh, I would have shipped it back and paid the shipping cost, but I'm happy with it. Again, I fully admit I can't be 100% objective.

Here's a related thread about SH CS basses if you have not already found it. Sean Hurley Fender CS P-Bass / String Mute Q

Haha nope! It’s a 2013 1964 Jazz Bass in 3 tone sunburst. Bought it here at Talkbass. I have a set of old TI’s for it when it gets to me. Now all I have to buy is an Acoustic 360…

Really nice bass; I have the 2011 NOS version (see page 1, #16) with TI's. Love them; still have the same set on, and it still sounds great. Would that be an Acoustic 365 with the folded horn 18" or do you already have the 105 18"?

Thanks! Your jazz is sweet, and I bet it sounds sweeter. I need the whole rig including the cab and Amp (preamp? idk). However I need to save more dough to get it, but my rumble 500 should be adequate for the time being.

Come to think of it, it was the 361 (had the preamp on top I guess and the amp in the cab?). Whew, it's been a long time. Ha Ha. Back in the '70s ('80s?), a friend of mine had a 371 (everything on top, I think). I remember him saying he didn't care for it because no one in the front or middle could hear the bass, while folks in the back of the room would get pounded. It sure was a cool looking setup. I've always liked Fender amps; always wanted a Dual Showman back in the day.
