Fender Precision Bass, fake or genuine?

The great news is you spent NO money on this sled.

100% Bogus. A really crappy fake that somebody spent money for one of those 'replacement' (!) Fender decals.

It's barely worth the beer can full of gasoline it would take to burn it.

This is what happens when people have trouble getting gigs unless the head stock says fender....

By this point you’re know it’s not a Fender.
You said you don’t have much bass knowledge, here’s you chance to get some.
Check out stuff on YouTube about setting up, repair and soldering.
Don’t drop a lot of money on it.
It’ll be a good start without worrying about messing a good bass up.

second glance.... with a little work this could be the perfect gigging bass - as long as it can sound good. Dumb guitarists might think it's an old fender, and no one would steal it.

I'd either go to great lenghths to make it pretty, or leave it half grungy for the "so fugly it's cool" look.

I say go for it!

Everyone is saying to can it or burn it, but no one has played it. The neck may not be that bad and it might sound good. If so, new tuners, a replacement bridge, strings and a volume knob....$100.00 later and you have a serviceable bass.

OP, if you know someone who can play it, have them tune it (looks like you can't tune one string) and give it a go. If you like the sound, it can probably be saved if the neck is not in bad shape.

Later you will need a tort...

If it doesn't play well, maybe sell the body.

I'd fix it up, but spend the absolute minimum to do so. Then I'd give it to some kid who wants to play and can't afford to buy a bass.

poor old bass.....just wanted to be played and loved,not squirreled away and forgotten....poor old thing,,,,slapped with a fake tattoo claiming its somthing of importance......now its labeled as junk!......you need to step up and give this guitar a chance,,,fix it up if you can, and pass it on to a young kid thats itching to become a bass player..
i think ole ''crusty'' deserves love.....

Hi All,

Hoping to pick your brains on this, my Bass knowledge isn't so great.

I have an old Fender Precision Bass which was given to me some years ago in pretty bad shape. It had since been kept in the loft (not me who put it there) and have recently found it and took it out. Unfortunately as you can see in the photos, it's in very poor shape.

Wondering if this could potentially be a fake Fender Precision, are there any specific tell-tale signs or any reliable way I could confirm if it was genuine or not.

If genuine, do you think it would be worth fixing it up?

I thinks it's a 60's or 70's Japanese copy. It looks like the fingerboard has detached from the neck, so the neck is toast. It may be possible to get a replacement neck, but careful measuring would be needed to ensure it would fit. Most necks follow standard Fender dimensions, but some of the old copies are significantly different.

Decal might be real...not even applied correctly though.

Besides everything else others pointed out, there’s something strange about that decal on the headstock. it has clearly defined edges and it looks like there’s dirt under it, but not around it. It’s like it was applied to an old headstock that was later cleaned up a bit. This has big red flags all over it.

Regardless of its authenticity, it definitely needs flats and a fresh tort pickguard…
