Fender Rumble Club

The ivory one above is a 500. Regular sized baby. I would've been fine with a 40 or 100 but it seems the choice was limited to the 25 or 500 and I thought I'd probably not be into a dinky 8" combo. I'm pretty happy with the baby though. ... ... ...

I dunno, corny, that's a big beautiful baby that is a header taller than a 500, IMO. Glad you're happy with it, though, that usually is best for all. 😉
And, yeah, why not an ivory 40, 100 or 200?!? What's that aboot? And I used to think the same about the 25, until my rival in one jam group (we switch off bass & guitar) brought a Rumble 25 and it sounds great in that group! Not the first time I've been re-educated by a Rumble*.

... ... ... This wouldn't be in my house if it wasn't ivory, it just looks so sharp. It's been a while since I bought a new/modern combo amp, so some first impressions: my expectations were not high based on past Fender products, but this amp really sounds good. I played a JB-75 and '66 Mustang both w/ LaBella LTFs through it, and a Kramer Striker strung BEAD w/ steel rounds. Plenty of growl and bump is on hand, I'm not used to 2x10's but I'm getting those sea legs back (I actually just added an SVT-210 HE cab to the pile and have been getting used to it vs. my usual 1x15 go-to's). ... ... ...

Personally, I'm not so much into "showy", or cleaning, enough to go for an ivory amp. I like inconspicuous and "hides dirt" better. Other'n that I used to have similar views as yours. (And I helped raise 5 big beautiful babies! Now a bunch of g'kids & a gg'kid!!) Until the Rumble V2 350 amps and neo 2x8" & 1x12" mini-cabs in 2011 I never gave Rumbles much consideration. Actually really just curiosity then, too. But, when the 500 combo appeared in 2014 I bought one just to debunk the advertised combination of price, power, tone & lightweight. And, I had been a total 15" snob in my bass preferences. But, when my new 500 combo even handled the low B on my 5 string with great punch and tone, I was converted*! Now, my top 3 basses are all BEAD in response to my Rumble ramblings. 😁

... ... ... The EQ seems fine, as usual I have no use for the horn/tweeter so it's turned off - thank God they have it on a switch. I get that people want it, but to my ears it only adds maybe 5% more high freq. signal. ... ... ...

There are several Rumblers here feel like that. Some only turn on the horn when playing songs thru the Aux input. Otherwise, I reckon it's more for the bright clanky metal sound. 🤔

... ... ... Otherwise I have it all set flat, the gain at ~3 o'clock and master to taste. This seems just fine set flat.

If by "set flat" you mean setting the 4 EQ knobs (B, LM, HM, T) all at 12 o'clock I feel obliged to tell you that is not actually flat response! Manufacturers usually design the "all 12s" settings to give their products their signature tone. That's one way to tell different brands apart.
In the TONE POOL section of your Rumble Wiki there is a link to Settings for Flat Response that shows the difference between "all 12s" and actual flat. 🧐

... ... ... The 3 EQ/tone settings are OK, I don't really have a need for them but nice to have. ... ... ...

Not to get pedantic (too late?) but we refer to those 3 buttons as preset "voice" buttons, or simply presets or "voicings", since they are additive to the 4 EQ settings and not absolute settings themselves. The Bright, Contour & Vintage frequencies are also graphed, too. 😉

... ... ... I'm not a big fan of the how the overdrive sounds at any setting. This is really the only thing where I have to pull out my corksniffer card. No biggie as I've got other fuzz pedals that do a better job, but nice to have it either way. It would still be a great amp without the EQ buttons, horn and overdrive, but I get why options are added to products to make them competitive, etc. Overall a solid buy! ... ... ...

Yes, you're not the Lone Ranger in your feelings on the Overdrive. I find it sufficient only because I rarely use much distortion, but rather just a bit of "warmth". But, if you're not going to use the built-in Overdrive for distortion, it can function as a Mute button and is, therefore, even footswitchable! 😲

... ... ... That makes 10 amps in the house now. Time to STOP and/or see what can be disposed of.

You're preaching to the choir here, farmer! But, alas, we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of more reasonable gear choices in one way or another. 😇
Thanks for this intro and review, cornfarmer. And, again, Welcome to the Rumble Club.

When I had my R500 disassembled I tested the two 10” drivers and the horn one at a time, individually, outside of the cabinet.

With the horn, I was finger plucking higher notes and getting very little sound, even with the gain and master turned up pretty high. I thought it was defective. Then I popped the G string hard and almost blew my ears off. Same when I popped the D string. Apparently that frequency range (whatever it is)(bright clanky metal sound - per @G-Dog 😀) is where the horn adds a lot.

Once I start learning slap/pop technique and using it, I’m sure I’ll be happy to have the horn available. Right now, I’ve got the switch off, also, as I hear very little difference in sound with the way I’m currently playing.

I'm assuming they use a frequency splitter with a sharp roll-off for the tweeter.

They should. Tweeters can only do high frequencies. Their job stops below a couple of kiloHertzes. That is where woofers (@g-dogs? :D) woof naturally :) (sometimes with a LowPassFilter so frequencies don't overlap as much)
Exactly. Otherwise you waste watts, ugly-distort the sound, and risk frying something (and I don't mean bacon).

Holy guacamole, it's triple play Tuesday!
@JumboJett35, you are now member #1852, and
@cornfarmer you are now member #1853, and
@lowend4life, you are now member #1854 in the Fender Rumble Club.

Congratulations and welcome. Put your number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourselves at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

Jumbo, I hadda find your Rumble in another thread, since you didn't mention it here. But, whoop, there it is!

corny, is that a 40 or a bigger-than-I-thought baby looking at a 50? Cute kid, either way.

lowly, you should check out the Rumble Talks section of your Rumble Club Wiki for answers to your questions, especially the one about the Overdrive Gain, Drive & Level controls.

How about each of you telling us a bit about yourselves, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journeys in particular? You're all bound to fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Rumble On!
Thanks for the welcome. I've been playing for a few years now, exclusively in my basement as a hobby. I would like to join a band eventually but I still haven't gotten myself out there. I bought the rumble 40 as my first amp. I didn't really know anything about them but living in an apartment at the time, I couldn't justify anything bigger/louder. Admittedly I don't use it much anymore as I've since moved and gotten a bigger/louder amp. It still amazes me how good it is when I do turn it on. These are great amps and I would recommend them to anyone.

So what are you playing instead of the Rumble?

I picked up an ivory Rumble 25 from my local Guitar Center in the St. Louis area a few days ago. They also had an R500.

I was hoping for a 40 or 100 but they don't seem to be available at this time. I listened to the You Tube video that compares the various Rumble speaker sizes, including the one in the R25 and it sounded pretty good for its size.

The R25 is working out just fine for my low volume practicing and learning songs on You Tube, and goes well in my living room.

Rumble on!

Are these a GC exclusive? Every post online I've seen mentions getting one at GC. Same price or an upcharge?

Getting all nostalgic about the blonde/oxblood 1961 Bassman head I used to own.

EDIT: went to GC’s website and yes it’s an exclusive and yes, it’s an extra $35. Now if only the grille was oxblood :woot:

Hmmm, GC is getting more generous. Music & Arts stores, and online, (an American Music affiliate) also now shares the ivory 25 & 500! 😲

So, I just upgraded my home practice amp from a Rumble 25 to a Rumble 100 v3.

I was able to A vs B test the 25 vs 100 about 6 weeks ago at Sweetwater. Realized a better amp made a huge difference in how each of my basses sound. So, pulled the trigger.

Appreciate all the input here. Set it up and played several hours today..
Wow... what an upgrade. The clarity, particularly on the lower notes is really marked.

I'm learning now all I can do with the various options.

Very happy to have this now!

Ditto...my Rumble 25 works dandy for my home practice
I only use my 25 at home for solo practice...OD is irrelevant for me in that setting, thus I neither use it nor ponder workarounds thereof 😁
... ... ... in an A-B test through a Fender Rumble 100c (which I don't own) and a Rumble 25 (which is my home practice amp).

Wow.

What a difference.

Confirmed in my mind ( more importantly, in my ears) my next upgrade is not a new bass but a new combo amp.

Thanks, @G-Dog !

I'm just a retired guy who now has time to get serious about bass. Taking lessons every two weeks, plus playing 3x / month with my church band.

Enjoy all the input in this thread!

Joe

I was just reviewing our
Geo bought a very expensive scotch where they were playing and placed it on top of his rig....the glass decided to play the old electric football game and scored a touchdown on the floor. Never got more than a sip. Fortunately, not into the amp.
Setting a drink on top of an amp or cab is a mortal sin.

Congratulations!
Hope you are staying safe from those floods in Texas, Miles...I notice you live not that far from Austin..which is a Sister City to my hometown of Adelaide South Aust. Anyone affected by the horrendous Texas floods...we are thinking of you here in Australia and praying for your safety...Australia, a country that also is affected by terrible flooding at times. Stay safe all those affected by this tragedy.

Thanks, Giffro. Yeah, next door to Austin just outside Round Rock. Neither city got hit horribly this time. We’re fine; we’ve always looked at flood possibilities when buying. If we get flooded then the whole state’s washing away.
Georgetown, just to the north, had some spots hit fairly hard. The really devastating stuff was ~50 miles away.
