Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800

Thanks G-Dog. I'll check out the LT25 and give some thought to whether a tablet might make the Studio 40's app more tolerable. Cheers!

Tablets make a huge difference with the Tone App. ... ... I'm not saying go buy a tablet to use your amp, but if you have a use case for a tablet (or already own one) using one with these amps is almost required. At least with the Studio 40.

My Nexus 10 tablet (loved it) died, and I never replaced it. You're right that buying a tablet just to run the Tone app isn't enough reason. The app does what it does on my S10+ phone.

Agreed. A tablet is not necessary just to run the Tone App. But if you have one for other purposes, it can make the App easier, IMHO.

One of my friends recently bought the big new 14" Samsung tablet to transfer his song tabs from his 12" Apple tablet that he's been using for gigs! Yep, he's even older'n me and his cataracts aren't operable, yet.

I just had my 2nd cataract surgery yesterday! Woo hoo! The first one is already 20/20, and I hope the 2nd one gets there, too. :D

What’s everyone’s opinion on setting up the following effects list in an ideal way for using the foot controller for the Stage 800:

compressor > fuzz > overdrive > phaser

Generally, I keep my compressor on constantly so I wouldn’t want to have access to turning it on/off.

The option I’m considering is using compression in the amp section but that might effect the overall response of the fuzz/overdrive.

A. Hi, there, ...uh, ... Moisty!?! :D Welcome to TalkBass in general and to this Fender Rumble Club sub-thread in particular! Please mention your Rumble in the Rumble Club and get a free membership. It's not required, but it's a bit of fun, and resources, that we like to share here.

2. Ummm, ... since the Effects Mode of the MGT-4 Footswitch (which comes with the Rumble Stage 800) gives you on/off access to just the first 3 effects in a preset's chain, then you probably oughta put your fuzz, overdrive & phaser in those first 3 positions (though not necessarily in that order).

iii. Is that at all helpful? Or too obvious?

Mmm, ... you, uh, lost me there, Moisty. I don't know what you mean by "in the amp section". I believe you can only place effects before or after the amp, no? Or did you mean "before the amp" as being like placing an effect "in the amp section"?

Please pardon me if my lack of chained effects knowledge is showing. :bag: I still haven't combined many effects in my Studio 40. And, instead of tweaking presets "on the fly", I use different presets (which I rarely tweak once set) for different sounds. But, maybe that's just me, I dunno :smug:

Can anyone else help here? :wideyed:

I think by "in the amp section" Moistbudda means the compressor setting that's included with each amp. It's basically just a one-knob equivalent (1 - 9), but is handy because it's got a small processor footprint. Not so handy because it's not as flexible and you can't turn it on or off with the footswitch.

That makes sense, Gsnorgy. Thanks!

I guess I didn't think of that since the question seemed to me to be about where to place a [virtually external] stomp box. That, and the fact it's not footswitch accessible, must have driven it out of my consideration. Well, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it! ;)

correct, I don’t entirely need access to the compressor but I would prefer the compressor at the start of my signal chain. Might have to compromise that aspect to have access to each effect.

If using the in-amp compressor, just put all the other effects after the amp. The first three of those will then have on/off access on the footswitch.

Hi all. New member. Just picked up a Rumble Studio 40. Demoed a regular 40, 100 and the Studio. My favorite sound was the 40, tight and punchy with good articulation, but opted on the S40 for the possibilities (plus an effects loop and Bluetooth connection).
A bit of buyers remorse as when I got it home and started going through the presets I feel many lack that dig and clarity the regular 40 had… alas I’m here amongst you the experts to dig out the tones and get me to the heart of the beast! ... ... ...
Cheers, Phil

Well, Phil. I see from the Stage and Studio Stock Presets File in the @Droopy_TX Rumble Preset Experience sub-section of the Tone App Support section of your Rumble Club Wiki page, that the #4 preset Basic Rumble V3 has these settings:

Screenshot_20220507-201742_Dropbox-01.jpeg

Screenshot_20220507-201815_Dropbox-01.jpeg

Do those look anything like the settings you tried on the non-modeling Rumble 40? If not, you can change them to see if you can get the tone you remember it having. You might wanna save that into one of the blank #101 thru #200 preset spaces for changing up without changing your stock preset #4.

Good Luck!

Thanks @G-Dog! I hadn't realized you answered this over here, lol.

I got a good ways into things now and must say it was more frustration than warranted. Seems the main thing that needed tweaking is the modeled amp volume (not the power amp master). After messing with a LOT of settings, gains, the sound was always too soft. It never occurred to me the volume was just too low .

By the way, those Excel sheets are :hyper:. Amazing!

I have the "Basic Rumble V3" set EQed flat, all buttons out and no cab. Setting Volume to 10 and adjusting gain to suit (think it's around 5), I can now have my bass turned up (passive Barts) and the Master sits around 4 and the thing POUNDS! It was just the volume was way too low at the 4.6 it comes in at default. All this is saved on #101 as I'll keep all the presets as defaults to noodle with as time goes on.

So word to new initiates of the Studio 40, the volume of some of the presets is LOW. To the point where I could barely hear fingers sliding on new rounds. Maybe this was done for the Stage 800 as I'm sure it's quite a bit louder and they use the same presets for both? Regardless. To get the Rumble V3 tone I just needed to turn up the volume. Now I have the one-trick-pony hid inside the Pandora's box, hahaha.

Glad to hear you're finally getting what you want from your Studio, Phil. AFAIK, you're the first to report here that the modeled amp volumes are set too low. But that's OK. Different strokes for different folks.

And, YES indeed! Those spreadsheets and PDFs that @Droopy_TX made exposing and decoding the Stage & Studio presets really are :hyper: Amazing! ;) They should be included in the manual, IMHO!

"Flat" EQ on the Rumble 40 is 10-2-2-10 (bass-lomid-himid-treble). Is it the same for the Rumble V3 preset on the Studio 40?
I need to check but I don't think so. In my explanation, I'd set dials to "12 o'clock" or 5.0 for "flat'. I'll most definitely try your setting!

I'm curious though, how did you arrive at 10-2-2-10? Only so I understand more :)

Check out this post from the Fender Rumble Club WIKI on TalkBass. This is what I was referring to.

Fender Rumble 500 Frequencies | TalkBass.com

He picked 10-2-2-10 because it was easier to remember than 10-1:30-2-9:30.

He also mapped the frequency response for the 3 buttons.

That is more awesomeness! This thread keeps blowing me away.

I see that I need to clarify how I note settings. On the S40 you get a number from 0-10 in 0.1 increments as you dial in or out a setting. The o-clock settings on the regular Rumble also makes perfect sense but is an extreme difference! Is there an agreed to way to note settings here or is it always best to write out the units? (this is a great example to show to a lazy engineering student as to why units are so important!)

The info here on TB is almost as much fun to dig through as the tomes on the S40 (almost, lol). As an example, I learned today on here to turn off Wifi when not in use. My amp cut out twice last night while using BT input from my computer. My simple remedy was to turn off BT and plug into the Aux (REALLY improved the BT latency too), but I'll give this a go tonight with the corrected Flat settings :) Isn't learning fun!!!

And I learned something from you! My new Studio 40 cut out once. I'll turn off BT and WiFi. I was worried that I got a broken unit...and I've already recycled the shipping box and materials.

I think that if the model is clear (Studio/Stage vs. Classic v3) there's not an issue (0-10 vs o'clock).

For reference, I got that from here on the Wiki page :Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800

YES! WiFi is strictly for updating firmware only and can interfere with operations at other times!

AND, Bluetooth is for either audio streaming OR the Tone App, but the Clock Knob Reading wiki!

I think that if the model is clear (Studio/Stage vs. Classic v3) there's not an issue (0-10 vs o'clock).

But, within the Studio/Stage presets the modeled amp will have a bearing on o'clock or 0-10, or even 1-10! The Bassman controls are an example of 1-10, as shown on Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800 page.

I do not know if any of the modeled amps "go to 11". But if they do, it may make some difference whether they start at 0 or 1.

I'd say it's always best to specify where you're getting the settings from. If it's from the knobs, say "the knobs are at..." and then use clock settings. If the app, say "in the app, they're set at..." and use the numbers that the app gives you. Not much ambiguity that way.
