Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800

My Rumble Studio 40 arrived today and I fear it’s going straight back to Sweetwater. There’s severe high-frequency digital noise that is present at all volumes. I haven’t ruled out an issue with my electrical wiring, but none of my other amps does this. Either way, the amp is unusable to me unless I can identify and rectify this.

This is the noise I’m hearing. I dimed the highs/mids and cut the bass to emphasize the noise. Has anyone else experienced this? Sounds like processor noise. Unless it’s a matter of poor grounding of my house electrical system, I can’t imagine it NOT being the amp. I’ve tried different outlets on different circuits and turned off any devices that might be generating RFI, all to no effect. If I can figure out how to do a factory reset, I’ll try that. Otherwise I am out of ideas. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I really want this amp to work for me.

Hola, @WW2PT! Have you tried turning off the high-frequency horn with the switch on the back? Have you tried several different presets? Perhaps trying it at another building could help determine if it's your house wiring?

At least one new user found the preset volumes to be set too low for his taste, and increasing that helped with some hum he was getting. (He also found an improperly grounded switchplate on his bass was a noise problem!) Have you tried other basses?

Anyone else here have any ideas to help our newest member?

I’m still messing with the Studio 40. Switching off the horn helps, and there are several stock presets that minimize the noise, but it is always there a low volume. I’m just tonight (this morning, rather!) getting a chance to dig into the manual, explore the settings, learn the ropes and such.

I really love this amp, it checks every box on my list. I’m going to keep playing with it over the weekend, try it at a friend’s house, see whether the noise goes away. It’s definitely not like an AC hum, it sounds like digital noise like from an unshielded serial line. Something is generating RFI that’s getting picked up by the amp’s audio stage ahead of the pre-FX stage.

Thanks for the input. Name’s Paul, btw. I should probably add that to my sig. :)

Hi, Paul. I see that you've been on TB for a little while. Welcome to this thread. I also see that you've found the full Rumble thread and that @G-Dog has issued you a priceless Club Number! ;) Excellent! Check out the Fender Rumble Club Wiki that is linked in his sig. To save you some clicks, I'll add the link here.

I just purchased a Studio 40 myself. I had to sell my 40 and 200 combos when I moved to France (the U.S. Rumbles don't have switchable power supplies, and I have 230 VAC over here).

I had the opposite problem to start with. Occasional audio dropouts. The amp would go silent. Another TB member in this thread helpfully pointed out that the WiFi in the Studio 40 and Stage 800 should only be enabled for firmware updates and then switched back off again. It's a known, documented issue. Hope to save you that one little annoyance if you haven't seen/heard it yet.

Good luck rectifying your noise issue. The Studio 40 is a great little amp.

BTW, "flat" EQ on the non-modeling Rumbles is close to 10-2-2-10. Use those settings with the Rumble V3 patch to approximate the original Rumble 40. Switch off the horn tweeter for that preset. The 40 and 100 combos don't have one.

As soon as I find a house to rent full time, I'll replace my 200 combo and add a 210 cab. Then I'll be really able to "Rumble On".

I'm sure we all sincerely wish you the best, Paul! I dearly love my Rumble Studio, as do many here, and like to see others come to terms with these very versatile devices.

LeMaartien makes some excellent points, as always, though hopefully unrelated to your noise:
  1. The wifi is only for updating the firmware. Otherwise, keep it turned off.
  2. The Bluetooth is for the Tone App controller or audio streaming, but not both simultaneously.
I also most heartily recommend the Tone App Support section of your Rumble Club Wiki page, especially The Droopy_TX Preset Experience sub-section with its DECODER files of every stock preset!! That is some of the most educational Stage & Studio documentation you can get anywhere!

Actually, Paul, there’s a specific place in your profile called "Location" for your town, and most people seem to prefer to put their given name right under their username, if you wish. That frees up the signature for multiple club listings indicating your interests. ;)

Many thanks for the replies. Turning WiFi off was one of the first things I tried. Bluetooth as well. Tweeter stays off all the time—I usually can’t tell the difference anyway, at least not at the living room volumes I’m playing.

I just briefly looked at the Wiki page. VERY nice! Lots of good information, I’ll be digging into it.

So after two days of puttzing around with the amp, I have reduced the noise to a level that’s low enough to be inaudible most of the time. I still plan to test it on someone else’s electrical system in a newer home before deciding about returning it. Playing around for hours with this and getting a grip on all the controls and the iPad app has been a lot of fun, this is a very cool little amp for practice. I’ve tried it with a P-Bass and fretless Jazz, both passive, and they both sound amazing. Up to now I’ve been playing through my guitar practice amps (Spark 40, Peavey Vypyr) which work okay, but the Rumble is head and shoulders above both. :)

Progress is good. :D It’s part of my rolling practice station now. My wife calls it my “crash cart.” My guitar practice amp is the Spark 40 (which isn’t half bad for bass, either), so I now have two Bluetooth-capable modeling amps with a Godzillion onboard effects that I can control from across the room with my iPad. This would have been science fiction when I started playing. Gotta say, I love the future!

Cosmetics are more personal choice. Personally, I like the all black look. Curious to see what they say about it functionally.

The reviewer liked pretty much everything about the Stage 800. He was impressed that it had both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity as well as the ability to download more features and customize them. The sound straight out of the box was very good and he liked the effects and amp models, while mentioning that there was a bit of a learning curve which is understandable given the number of features. He noted that the construction and overall quality were excellent. Overall a glowing review!

For the record, I feel some nostalgia for the silver grill since my first real amp was a blackface Bassman, but I think the all black look is very cool and would be happy to have it on stage with me. Uh-oh, I feel a G.A.S. attack coming on.

Based on the very positive review in Bass Player referred to above, I bought a Rumble Stage 800. I love the pure sound and power of the amp but am not at all taken with the presets. Most of them are pretty awful and I can get far better distortions when I want them with my pedals. ... ... ...

You might want to checkout the Droopy_TX Preset Experience sub-section of the Tone App Support section of your Rumble Club Wiki page. Droop did an excellent job of transcribing all the stock preset settings to his DECODER FILES so that anyone can see them for planning their tweaks. Perhaps a few adjustments can get them where you want them.

... ... ... Is there a way to disable them so I don't even have to think about them?

There is the X FX utility button in the controls that disables all effects in all presets. There isn't any category selective disablements. Sorry.

You could use the 101-200 empty presets to make your own without adding any distortion effects.

I wasn't enamored with the factory presets when I got the S40 either. After a while they grow on you, but I still work mostly with a simple preset I made. Basically it's a Rumble V3 amp with no pre or post chained effects. No "room" or cab either. Make sure all the buttons are off too (no contour, vintage or bright). This to me sounds the closest to the 40C I've tried in store. For me on the S40, the "volume" in the modelled Rumble V3 was too low but at full/10, it now has the punch of the 40C. This was a game changer for me, now the Gain and Master change like you expect them to.
I've since made a clone of it with the recommended "flat" settings from the wiki. I go between these presets most of the time, only dabbling in the factory ones every now and then. The "flat" EQ with the vintage button in is really good with a single coil Bronco I like to mess with, lol!

Thank you, @GregT, for your contribution to @Musicislife816's troubleshooting! Greg, your mention of cleaning the FX Return jack on our Rumbles reminded me that this was not on the Wiki page. So, I have linked a description of that problem, and fixes, on the Rumble Club Wiki page near the bottom of the Rumble Talks section. This is a good example of a helpful, and sometimes necessary, procedure that has had many good outcomes.

Thanks, Greg, for your contributions.

I hear you. The longer I played the Stage 800 the more I found myself with wanting only one or two presets. Some people love it and others rather go with pedals, etc. I actually sold mine for an Ampeg RB-210 (500 w) with an Ampeg 115 cab and haven't looked back; the "SGT" (super grit technology) is amazing! Peace!

Thank you, @GonePlaid for cleaning up. Goner, your "Fender (mostly Rumble) Family" portrait has been linked on the Rumble Club Wiki page near the top of the Rumble Artwork section, right under Leo's smiling visage. This is a great example of the modularity of combos in general, and the synergy of Rumbles in particular.

Thanks, Plaid one, for your musical persistence and for sharing with our great community.
