The problem with no strap is that if you work the bass a fair amount it can get away from you. I've been wheedling away and had it almost crash to the floor.

With recessed straplocks, seems like there is no reason not to have them. At least then you have the option.

One can always have them put on later , no?
any builder can do that I'd guess.
So why not see how it works without and decide later on if to add them.:)

If you use recessed then you have to drill out the body. Frankly I'd want Fodera drilling holes in my Fodera if they need to be done.

I actually had pondered going with regular straplocks but evidently Vinny hates them. I've gotten to appreciate the recessed ones. You really can't tell they are on the bass. I suppose you could build it without and then send it back to Fodera to have them installed after the fact but I'd have them done up front - really no downside but ymmv.

that was the only time in my life i could have ever really justified paying those prices (although those 10 year old prices are looking good now:D).

good thing was the money i got for selling the fodera paid for a 64 p bass,70's F bass vf5 and a nordy vj5:hiding:

This seems like the way to go.

What shape were you originally getting?

I personally dislike the look of the non-carved topped Presentations I've seen.

Definitely a preference thing of course but if I weren't going carved top, I'd stick with an EMPII.

Naw, it's not big deal installing the recessed Dunlops. I guess that's coming from someone who has built around 600 guitars and basses..lol

Joel, I originally spec'd an older AJ6(his first fodera from the 80's) but since they were offering to build the single cut which I wanted in the first place I changed my order. You know that buckeye fretless you had with the single aero pickup sealed the deal for me. I loved the look of that bass. The carved top is very elegant looking but AJ's bass is not what I am wanting as it is now.

It was not. It was a solid body and was not a carved top either.

Great bass I just always regretted not getting a carved top on that one. I loved the top we picked for it though and it unfortunately just wasn't thick enough to carve.

It always looked odd to me next to my fretted Presentation that did have the carved top. That bass is just so elegant and gorgeous.

I'm sure Dan's bass will be awesome. This stuff is all personal preference only.

I saw Lincoln Goines play last night with Tim Miller in Boston. Anyone know anything about Linc's bass? How does he have such a big sound with the one bridge pickup? Is his preamp in the cavity set with a big bass boost, and does Mike make a special preamp for his bass? I would've asked Linc but the guys were eating when I left. It was great to finally see him play. it's wonderful having him teaching up here now.

Drill out the body?
Just drill a hole big enough to hold teh strap button, put a screw in to tighten it down, done.
I got the feeling fodera won't do it in a way different to any other builder, but I get that you trust them more when it goes to an instrument they made.
Does Vinny hate regular strap buttons?

You should check your local laws. I'm pretty sure having another builder drill holes into a Fodera is illegal in my state.

Where I live it's ok.
Foderas are seen and treated the same way as any other builder's basses, so it's ok to drill.
The one rule that does apply is "do it carefully".:)
