Fodera Club Part XI

The bass is crazy to play. Jason was a big help in sharing the combined wisdom of Fodera in spec'ing this beast out. The sound is truly amazing. The playability is ridiculous.

That's a gorgeous bass. Very similar tone wood combination to what I'm considering, though a bit darker; actually closer to my current bass, though I have an ash top and alder TB.

How do you find the tone with the Braz. RW board and mahogany body, ash block? Is it pretty round and warm? Still some punch and clarity?

I've been reading up on this lately since I have a huge amount of claro walnut incoming on my new URB. The basics are that there is a bit of confusion over just what constitutes Claro, since it can vary depending on the source. It does seem to be more West coast and may have some grafts of eastern walnut species. When I go pick my upright in a few months I will be visiting the shop and want to ask my builder, Nick Lloyd, more about claro and where he gets it. I know he's crazy about it and has a stockpile since he needs lots of it to build even a single bass.

From what I've read, tonally, claro has a more open, porous texture that gives a little bit different tone than the dense, deep and articulate sounding walnut from the east. I spoke with my local classical guitar builder/luth about it, and he loves the stuff.

I think the sound of the famous Fodera users with walnut bodies- Garrison, Janek Gwizdala come to mind- have a good example of what the eastern walnut sound is like. Very distinct. I want to hear McBride's new fretless since it's got tons of walnut. I had Ken Smith Black Tiger Presentation with a bunch of crotch walnut, though the bass had a lot of other factors that contributed to it's sound, but to my ear there's something similar to that bass and say Janeks.

I don't think Fodera uses Claro on any body woods, and like Jason was saying, it probably doesn't impart a high tonal variation as a top vs eastern walnuts, so it's probably a mute point. I like the look of the crotch walnut a ton and will likely just go for a piece of that for my top when the time is right.

Yes! Couldn't have put it better. Lot's of clarity, great definition, yet warm and very round but not biting or overly aggressive.

It just sings...

Yeah, that seems like a nice blend if you like something on the warmer side. I'm in love with Braz. RW. I want to do that board with an ash body/mahogany TB, walnut top, so should be close to yours maybe a bit clear with the top and inverting the body/TB.

I also was going to do 34" and the extended B like yours as well, so I'm very interested in tour bass.

Can you post some clips of it? Would be really helpful to me.

My first fodera was walnut /ash, second was Braz RW/ mah. you guys have great taste in woods.... the 2 emporers have walnut bodies...

nice that Chestnut bass here is finished.... I've read through the old Fodera club parts some month ago and there was the owner posting the raw top and asked for a mock-up from member ? (I fergot his name;))

nice to see the bass finished

Hi Robin, I've just started to read up on Claro today and it's really interesting doing the research on just one wood component / ingredient. Like you, at one point I wanted a piece of that special BRW fingerboard, but having played an Ebony board and Maple neck combo now for a few months, I thought I'd stick with that + Walnut body with Alder heel block.

Chris Mcbride's bass, well what can you say apart from "Stellar". Like Jason and other TBer's I can't wait to hear him let loose on that thing. I saw him in London in 2009 with John McGlaughlin, Vinnie Colaiuta, Chick Corea with kenny Garrett on sax. Don't know what he was using on the gig but it was a black double-cut, fretless 4 string with what I think were single coils, man he sounded sweet, hence The Emperor I guess. Don't want to stray too off-topic but I've seen a few comments from upright players critisizing his left-hand approach; don't know what that's all about, but I remember closing my eye's and just listening for alot of the gig and he still sounded brilliant, not a note out of place.

Lovely Chestnut top.

Sometimes when you stare a little too long and hard at these tops you start to imagine characters or faces in the piece.

This one could be Donkey from Shrek or Porky Pig, after a night of debauchery, wakes-up the following morning with his snout trapped in the pups & strings..Can't you see it..LoL :rollno:

Just waiting now to get it here and plug it in, looking forward to trying the ash/braz spec in this Fodera. :bassist:

Thanks, it was a long wait but Jason, Vinny and Joey were Saints fielding all my spec questions both in person and via email and phone. Jason particularly..... only raves re customer service from me.
