I had purchased it as a backup to my much beloved stingray. I intend to use it as a gigging bass, my ray is too precious to be stolen/lost/destroyed. Never really got on with two pickup basses, but my precision wasn't really doing it for me the same way the stingray does. That's why we get more basses though, right?

The swirl finishes are relatively common, I saw lots of them back in the 90s. That ASAT is probably the nicest example I have ever seen, congrats!
The picture is deceiving, it has a bit of finish lift/checking around the pickups....that thankfully looks like the usual dust you accumulate from not cleaning it.
Duke, that emerald/turquoise swirl is....just....stunning. Really really dig it man! If you ever have to refinish the fretboard, maybe add something to the epoxy to make a swirl effect up the neck?
bdgotoh: I have no doubts that they were done in large production runs. An image search shows very few Basses in it, even fewer ASATs/L2500s. Lots of bluesboys. In fact, that orange autumn sparkleburst on that stingray is also a 'rare' but common one. I see them for sale occasionally, but, personally, I think I lucked out with mine. Very little metal flake on it except for the headstock. Definitely a more 'toned' down version than the candy flake ones. I love it.
I have a soft spot for oddball finishes <3

Not sure if you misinterpreted my post. Strike! just meant to be a reference to the bowling ball finish and to suggest "perfect shot!" Both of those basses look awesome.

Man, I really, really dig the sound. The preamp is taking a bit to get used to, especially coming from the 3 band ray. Usually series mode, passive in either front or both pickups. For tapping and aggressive stuff, active really makes the series mode shine. The parallel wiring I haven't really found 'my sound' with yet, even though the ray is a parallel humbucker as well. It makes a nice foil for the ol' orange whore.

Funny, that sounds just like how I run my L-2500. Series. Passive. Neck side soloed.

The Sterling H will have Parallel, Single Coil, and Series. You might find that it will give you the sound you like that you get from your Stingray, but you might like the Sterling Series mode even better - at least for some things.
I do think Parallel mode (on my Sterling and my former Stingray 5) was The Business for slap tone!

Might have to do a little bit more wiring this weekend, then, Stu. Have an on/on/on to do the K mod to the ASAT, might have to get a switch for series/parallel on the ray, as well. Just a question of whether or not i want to drill through the control plate. I think the parallel is just fine on my ray. I wonder what the main reason for different sound vs the ray is?

The only difference between a 3-band Stingray and a 3-band Sterling is alnico pickup (Stingray) vs ceramic pickup (Sterling), and the 3-way switch on the Sterling. So, when the Sterling is in Parallel, the only difference is the magnets in the pickup. Ceramic is generally described as having a slightly more aggressive sound.
I have the K option on my L-2500. I never use it. But then, I don't play my 2500 very much at all, anyway. My Sterling is my #1 bass by a long shot. The only other basses I play with regularity are my G&L SB-2 (with Tone added) with tapewounds, for when I need a P bass sound and/or want to play a 4-string, and my fretless J, which I built myself.
Sigh. I overcame all mental obstacles and put my L-2000 E series (1981) on the market locally. I am putting it on the "Europe and International" section on TB as well. I'd rather sell it face-to-face however so there would be no misunderstandings. I guess I am not a G & L collector then.
I just don't seem to be able to fit that bass in my playing routine in any way. It's got a new fretboard, nothing inherently wrong with it.
