So do most people run that switch in the middle position with the Preamp On?

I don't really know. I took the battery out of my fretless L2500, so I run passive only. I think you'll probably find more people who run passive than anything, but I could be wrong. I'd kinda like to have a fretted L2k and keep the preamp in as it does have a really meaty, aggressive quality to it.

I removed the actives in both of my 2500s in favor of full coil tapping. I never used actives in all the years I owned either L2000 or L 2500

Can anyone recommend a set of strings that will compliment this bass nicely?

From the factory, G&L's have come with both DA XL170 nickle, and, SIT Powerwound nickle.
I like either of those pretty well.

The new Dunlop Bright Nickles are highly recommended by the Nordtrand shop, and I got some to put on my Nordy, but haven't tried them yet.
I bet those would be good as well.

I love the XL170's. I hade never tried them until I got my LB 100 but I love them on that bass.

I've only had it a month, but have settled on passive mode + neck p'up solo for the moment.

It helps if you think of there being passive basses, active basses, and the L2500. It's a different beast.

I run my Trubute L2500 passive into my amp but active when I'm at a friend's house and plugging into his line level mixer. His mixer doesn't seem to have enough gain to deal with it passive very well. So very nice to have the flexibility.

Got my first G&L (used) a few weeks ago. Just ordered a set of DR Nickel Low Riders (.130 B). I hope I like them.

Most mixers have a line-level input impedance of ~10k ohms. The pickups need an impedance of 400k-1Meg Ohm to transfer the full signal strength and full frequency spectrum. The 10kohm input to the mixer not only kills the frequency spectrum, it also kills the signal level and requires more gain than the line level input has. When you use the on-board buffer, you load the pickups correctly, giving the full frequency range and the full signal level that the bass is putting out.

Yeah, I figured the mixer's input impedence was too low for the G&L in passive mode. Thanks for the specifics.

I just shipped my hot little Trib SB-2 to my brother wearing TI JF344 flats. Sweet. The SB-2 has enough innate mid-forward tone that I found rounds to be jarring. I have La Bella 760FS on my USA SB-2.

Then again, I have flats on every bass except the Jazzers!! Consider the source.

One of the nice aspects of MFD pickups, is that they're very "string friendly".

I too like XL170's on my SB2. If those are too zingy, I've also grown fond of GHS Pressure Wound (about the same as Ken Smith Compressors) on that bass; great "medium" sound in between rounds and flats. I agree it's a "string-friendly" bass.

You can use a (Klark) DI box to deal with the mixer impedance gap.

Or just flip the switch on your G&L to Active.
