G&L Club Part 7

Count me in for yet another Chunky-necked '83. It's a handful-o-chunk, for sure.

It's also got uncommonly strong mag pole pieces for a G&L, I have to keep them adjusted low or they'll wreak havoc.

I *think* it's May '83 but it's been a long time since I had the neck off. Curious....does yours have a skunk stripe?

Transition model, bi-cut neck, black crinkle hardware, serial # on the neck plate, old headstock.

Just to show how the vintage G&L market has changed over the years, I bought it off ebay 11 years ago for $399, in excellent condition. I was the only bidder in a 7 day auction!

No skunk stripe on mine. Here's something: when I took the neck off, it looked like the body has a primer in a flat brick color; not sure of the wood species, but it's really heavy.

NBD for me. I guess I should have let you all know that I was out of the G&L club with the selling of my JB-2. Well I am back in with a wonderful SB-2 picked up from a TB'er. I have been gassing for a P bass for some time now specifically an SB-2 or an LB-100 with a #8 and Geezer Butler pups. G&L is by far my favorite bass manufacturer. I have played all different types of basses and I just keep getting drawn back to the eye gouger. This SB-2 will be mine for a long time I think. It sounds killer, plays killer and looks killer. It also sates my G&L gas... for the time being.


Does anyone have an LB100 with GZRs by chance?

Intrigued by this question! I had thought it sacrilege to replace the G&L pups with aftermarket, yet the LB-100 sounds a bit trebly compared to, say, a P with a Fralin. How to address that? Darker capacitor? Or different pickup? Or just tweak the EQ on the amp and dig the many-splendored G&L tone with some added warmth?

Huh. Mine is a "white" wood, so it's not mahogany. Probably poplar, ash or possibly (but doubtfully) even maple. Shouldn't be alder in '83, but never say never with Fender. It weighs in at 8 lbs, 14 oz.

Thanks all for chiming in on the neck "chunkiness" for a 1983 L-1000. From the photos, it looks like a rounder radius than what I had on my 1984. No skunk stripe, so probably bi-cut.

The weight is 9.26 lb. The body has a bit of lacquer chipping but nothing extensive. I have it on reserve, pending delivery details.

Ash body, Old School Tobacco Sunburst finish, #12 quartersawn neck with rosewood fretboard and side dots only. Happy to have an identical twin.

EDIT: Um, that's Old School Tobacco Burst, or OSTB for short...

It's only sacrilege to replace a G&L MFD pickup. The LB-100 is totally kosher to ditch. I'd replace it with an MFD... :D

Lb-100 stock man. Great pickup. Get rosewood if you wanna darken it up... or that other knob besides the volume! Haha. The stock pickup can sound like a vintage p but also be aggressive unlike a rosewood fender p.
