G&L Club Part 7

That was my feeling last year when I purchased my CLF L1000 from Zzounds. Prior to January of 2019 you couldn't seem to buy G&L from any of the five big online shops (Sweetwater, GC, MF, AMS or Zzounds). Suddenly, they're available everywhere. That's significant and, undoubtedly, will have a dramatic impact on units sold.

Thankfully, I'm thrilled with the quality of my new bass. But, the concern over the impact rapid expansion may have on quality has crossed my mind as I contemplate the purchase of a US L2000. I've mentioned many times before, my only other experience with G&L was with the L1000 I bought back in late 1980. It was sold off a couple of years later and I've regretted it ever since. However, my new G&L has relieved that regret considerably.

The one thing all of this discussion has led me to is the realization that any future purchase will need to be done in person, or through a dealer like Rocket Music rather than the more typical online shops.

Is that a knock on other dealers or more of a praise for Rocket Music?

I think it's more praise for Rocket Music and similar independent shops with strong connections to G&L. These places know all the options, how the Custom Shop works, personally know the G&L reps, are good at resolving issues, etc. I haven't bought from Rocket, but have gone through similar shops, one of which helped me deal with a bad truss rod back in 2006.

I had that happen to a bass of mine too a few years ago. I took it to a pro and he glued it. Its been about 8 years since and it's still holding good. You should be OK. I had thought the bass neck broke on its own. I took it out of the bag a rehearsal one night, the first one after a gig, and discovered the crack. When I brought it in, the luthier asked if it had been stepped on. Then he showed me the bent tuning key. Thats when I realized it didn't just happen. Have you figured out how it happened to yours?

Yes, pretty sure I know exactly how this happened. A perfect storm of cold weather exposure and what I suspect to be an ill-fitting OEM tolex hardcase. I'll be taking some measurements today to confirm, but I suspect there is downward pressure on the headstock when the case is closed.

Ironically, of all the scores of basses I've owned, only two have ever had this happen....both G&L's....and both were transported during cold weather, and both traveled with their OEM tolex cases. :eyebrow: Both basses were built with #8 necks, which may or may not be a contributing factor.

I'm not blaming G&L build quality, nor the quality of materials used. But if it turns out that the OEM tolex cases can be adding unwanted stress at the basses' most critical area, then I'll know what future precautions to take....and what case modding is needed (read; deepening the notch in the case neck support).

Will report back with results for anyone interested. Cheers.

Very impressed overall with the quality,etc. So much that i went on the search for a US JB2,and wound up with a good one. The JB2 is exactly everything I would've hoped for,and has become one of my favorites.
And the LB is the best P bass i've ever owned, plays great, but I have once again come to the conclusion that soundwise, I'm just not a P bass guy, so it is on the outgoing list.
I recently got to try a tribute version of the kiloton,and think i would like that model much better.
(Only i want a US made one.)
