G&L Club Part 7

If memory serves, you're working with an L2500, no? That bass would run without a battery, so if the battery wire from the jack came disconnected there would be no effect (in principle at least, if there were no other shorts). Maybe the problem is not what you think—or at least what you took to be the battery wire was not that. I assume you tried to run the bass in passive mode?

My guitarist is not named Luther but works at GC and does set up guitars as well as teach.
That store doesn't own a fret file, straight edge, sanding block, or feeler gauges so it's pretty much truss rod adjust, string height, and intonation. But only if you take it in. Everything on the racks is straight out of the box which has been the standard in many shops near me. Maybe everywhere except the higher end shops?

The new SB-2 is pictured below. I'm a little surprised how different they sound. The one for sale is Swamp Ash with Maple and has more low end and more bite, has a great slap sound. The new one is Alder with Rosewood and the sound is more polite. Both are surprisingly versatile with just the two volume controls. I was going to add a tone, but I'm not convinced I need it.

Can the difference in sound be attributed to strings? Or are they both strung with TI flats?

I did have a problem with changing out the battery hours before a show and the didn't work at all. This is when I took it to GC Centennial and they said it was due to extra solder on the board and changed out the treble pot.

I had labella low tension flats on the ash body so not TIs but a similar style flat. I may or may not hear the bass difference in a mix, I hear it solo. Ash/maple basses bring more attack and lows to my ear and I prefer the alder/rosewood in other basses too. If I was doing more slap or funk, I think that ash/maple combo would be my pick. For more mellow bluesy stuff, I prefer that alder/rosewood. But honestly, if the ash/maple were a half pound lighter I would keep it and would never have bought the new one. The ash body is 9.2 and the alder 8.4. For me, that outweighs everything else. Get it, outweighs!!!!

I hope this isn't your problem, but if you don't use a heat sink when soldering, you can fry components. You need to find a competent luthier. Guitar Center is usually not the best place to go. I know of one exception in Fort Worth.

I am really torn on what to buy. I know for sure it's going to be an SB-2 with plans to add a tone control to it. I really want a USA model, but I also know the Tribute line is a stellar value, and a third of the price. Well half the price if I'm willing to buy a used USA version.

No real question, just putting my thoughts down here. It's hard for me to justify the cost of a USA model, but for a variety of reasons I sure want one.

Sometimes I consider future resale value when deciding how much to pay at time of purchase.

IMHO once you take a bass out of the shipping box, its used. So, just buying used makes sense, especially with G&L which seems to not have the re-sale value of some other builders. Since you want to add the tone control, just look for a used USA G&L SB2T and you'll be all set!

Or...

Just order through @RocketMusic and pick out every single option you want! You can't go wrong! Good luck!

I've always preferred the necks more on the US models.
