GASing for a G&L JB

Oooh wow. A JB for less than a Am Std. jazz. is an extremely good deal. I haven't seen new ones go for that price.
I loved the NENA because I got the whole package and didn't have to sacrifice color, so it worked well for me. As far as the sound.... Man that thing is smooth. Played through a Peavey Pro Bass 500 set flat and basically a 6x10 Avatar cab, I got that jazz bass tone. The sound was not HiFi metal sounding. It wasn't artificial you know. I have a maple on maple bass but this rosewood on swamp ash really have me that full round tone without being muddy or too bright. This sound would fit best in most of the settings I play in. I do slap often so with the volume knobs full on and the tone a bit over half, I got the quick snap percussive sound. Harmonics ring out beautifully as well!
That's pretty much in line with my observations too. I was really surprised at how the harmonics jump out so clearly.
I bet the single most important aspect is the bridge. The fact that it is routed into the body, has the locking saddle feature, and don't forget about the bone nut, it's really one big system amplifying the frequency response. This stiffness probably reduces the amount of damping therefore preventing dissipation of those harmonic modes.
i know the bass he's talking about. it's a tribute L-2500 that the owner put inlay stickers on.
I was looking after a G&L JB and found one, BUT...
Has no one noticed that the E and G strings are TOTALLY off the pickup poles on G&L JB's ??!! When I saw it I could hardly believe it was true, but it was. It results in a very bad vibrating chorus-like sound.
I looked at pictures of other JB's and it seems to be the same on all.
, that bridge is NOT made for JB's, it's made for all others G&L series like L-
I know that the strings never really are exactly in line over the pole pieces on a jazz bass, but this was WAY too much. Sadly but true.

Nope never saw that. The warbling sound can also come from not muting strings you're not playing. The magnetic field on the pickups are large enough to accommodate some variation in lining up.
the only time i've ever noticed that is when the pickups are too close to the strings.

Sounds like a setup problem. I've heard the JB in action plenty of times and it always sounded very strong. Never heard any "warbling."
Agree here: I own the JB, the E and G are not perfectly between pickup poles, especially when tightening the set screw, but with a good setup the output is strong.
