I dont find it the least bit surprising that Gene charges $5000 for this "bass".It's Gene,that says it all.He's a businessman first,musician second.If there was no money in music,do you think he'd perservere with it for this long?He's like the George Lucas of rock.

Gene will enjoy spending your money much more wisely than the buyer was able to do.

Really, people post here all the time about Craigslist and Ebay ads where somebody is selling a piece of gear for way more than it's worth and wanting to call everyone in the world to stop them.

Then other people will justify Gene selling at this price and get mad if you point out that they are getting ripped off...go figure.

I actually read every post so far in this thread. Some posters understand what he is actually selling. I don't think he is really trying to sell this bass to actual bass players. He is selling just another KISS collectable AND the experience of meeting him AND his autograph on the bass.

It really doesn't matter what he charges. There are KISS fanatics out there who will buy it. Do a search for KISS merchandise. One of the best/funniest I can recall was the KISS coffin. I bet they sold a bunch of those, and at a very high price!

Supply and demand, supply and demand...

No need to flame me...I'm neither for or against Gene or his bass. He does have the right to price it as he pleases.

His persona gets blurred with his business skills and his being a bass player.
I think his public personality is an act and he is probably a really nice, intelligent man who is trying to build as big a kingdom as possible to leave his children.
Not many will dispute his ability to make a buck.
His abilities on bass get slammed all the time here, but he really is a solid bass player. No he's not a Wooten, or Jaco, or Marcus Miller, nor does he try to be...but he can play some fairly busy rockin' lines, while singing and jumping around in platform boots.
When I was a kid he influenced me alot with KISS ALIVE, and I've kept an eye on the band ever since, BUT I've also grown up myself, and I realize KISS is a BRAND and a business..not an artform (at least not in the traditional sense...some consider business an art form). It's mearly entertainment, not a cause or a statement about anything other than, they want your money ...IMHO, of course.

Very similar to when the circus comes to town. You can have fun, but they came for your money.

I don't know everyone is getting so crazy over the price. It's terribly expensive and over priced, yes, but no one is going to buy it because of the tone. People will buy this as a novelty item, and frankly if you're spending 5k on a novelty bass, you're not buying it for the wood and you're certainly not hurting for cash.

I agree to a point. This is capitalism, you can charge what you want, and people will pay it. If you look at the buying page of the website, most of the basses have sold already sold out at each city. My assumption is that they are not being sold to serious musicians as stage instruments.

However...

Keep the focus on the instrument, guys...

My issue is with the blatant disregard for truth in advertising that this dofus is guilty of. Eastern wood, mositure, one piece, etc. His statements are packed with false and misleading statments, and the false statements are what disgusts me about the bass and it's originator/spokesman.

Definitely. He's making false statements about an instrument that he is selling at an astounding markup. That's pretty much a textbook definitinon of a rip-off.

You're all missing the point, this isn't a players' bass, and Gene isn't a players' player. It's like comparing apples to, well, an A$$hole. (I will delete that if thats not cool here)

Calling him a sell out is rediculous, KISS were selling out/cashing in the minute they put the makeup on and wrote the catchiest rock songs they possibly could. And there is a nice market of now grown up members of the KISS Army who are lawyers and dentists who will buy this bass/meet and greet, the ampeg, KISS action figures, dolls, underwear for their little midlife crisis KISS shrines. Which is totally cool, I'm just opting for an early 70's Nova myself.

And he's a complete jackass for sure, we can all play circles around him, but he's an ultra savvy self-promoter and any of us could dream of being half as rich or famous.

I don't think everyone here is taking shots at the guy for NO reason - we're taking shots at him because he's supporting a bass that costs $5000 and looks like something that could've been made in China with no specs to support WHY this bass could ever cost so much except for Gene's sig on the headstock.
