Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 discussion thread

Thanks Mike and Andy. It looks like that's a purchase then. I generally play fingerstyle and are used to having a mixture of trouser flapping bass and note clarity, it sounds like it can do both. Maybe it's time to go lightweight with the cab too. Added to my xmas list :-)

anybody have experience with this amp vs the shuttle in terms of the extended bass response of the 9 and if that is no good for using with bag end 15 and 12" cabs? i know it's a little overwattage for them (nominally) but they take a lot of abuse.

I don't. I used to use Bag Ends YEARS ago...back in the 80's; nice, nice cabs. I don't have them anymore though.

I see you're only half and hour from me. If you ever want to drive up to my office with your cabs in tow, you're more than welcome. I just had another TB'er from Connecticut at the office two weeks ago.

For the response about why it wasn't the amp for me...well basically I just don't think the tone is to my tastes. Too toppy and not thick enough, I know you can eq but I usually have amps flat then make small changes.

Lots of ppl will like the 9 though! Great cust service

Ok, but can you tell us WHY? What did you like and not like about the shuttle, and what were the final deciding factors in your purchase. What tone profile were you looking for, and why did the LMIII do it better, or was it a form/function decision?

Well i've owned the 6.0 and 3.0 (10T combo) and wnated more volume due to a change of gigging. Never got on with the tube pre in the 6.0 and i found it brittle sounding. Really liked the FET pre of the 3.0 but needed more volume.

Was buying new cabs too having sold my Neox 212. Tried the AE410 and AE210 bergs with the 9.0 and new they were the cabs for me. The 9.0 although fatter sounding that then 6.0 still didn't make me want to drop the money. It would have been okay and i could have lived with it but i wasn't 100% happy. i have auditioned a TC Electronic Classic before to but this was too fat.

Mark at Bass direct knows his stuff so when i asked 'where now' he said you are left with MB. So i plugged it in and there it was. Could get ever sound i wanted. I used to use a VT bass with the Shuttle but the LM3 gives enough options to lose that.

I play in church, hence where the 3.0-10T combo ruled and now a loud rock covers band hence the need for volume. I beleive the AE210 x 2 and LM3 will cover all of this easily but time will tell.

i don't know what others hear in the shuttles but i find them a bit weak in the lows.

Hope that helps

I posted this in another thread but figure I could get some more input from within this thread too so...

"Would you think it a terrible mistake to use a GB shuttle 9 w/ the little 8" from the 3.0 combo and just barely tap on the volume?

I would only need very little volume because I plan to use this setup to play w/ two acoustic players, not gigging, just practicing and jamming/writing.

I would just get the 3.0 but I want to get a 9.0 anyway and figured I could get away with occasionally matching it w/ the 8 for portablity's sake.

Is this an OK idea?"

i don't know what others hear in the shuttles but i find them a bit weak in the lows.

I've been gigging a Shuttle 6 into a 1x15 Flyte cab with a 4 ohm PV Black Widow since the Summer and from what everyone had been saying about the lows on the Shuttle 6, I thought I'd have to keep the lows dimed and the LF boost engaged to get the lows I was used to with my Eden WT400 or AMP BH-420.

I found that on the Shuttle 6 with the LF Boost off and the Low control set to 3:00 I get the same bottom as I do from the other amps (they also need the lows boosted) but on the Shuttle 6 the low end sounds punchier and a bit more distinct.

The Shuttle 9 is reportedly a bit more "lowend friendly" than the Shuttle 6 and I was considering getting one for just that reason but for me it's not really necessary.

I also compared my Shuttle 6 to a friend's Mark Bass LMT through my cab and though the MB can boost the lows more they're useless to me in my situation and just make things sound like mud.

sounds great but oddly enough i think i can find a store with both even closer. :smug:

even then, i'd love to hear from someone who has really pushed BE cabs with a 6 and/or a 9. real world situations and all.

It would be fine as long as you had reasonable expectations and did not use the low frequency extend or much bass boost for playing volumes. For lower practice volumes, there should be no problems, again as long as you have reasonable expectations.

I took a peek under the hood today. I'm not sure what power module it is, but it is definitely bigger than the 6.0's. The 6.0's power module board is about 2/3's or 3/4's the size of the 9.0's. From what I can see, the 2 main Capacitor's are a good deal larger as well. Most of the 9.0's power board is under a black plastic 'c' cover with a 'patent pending' sticker on it held down by 4 screws. I'm not removing the screws. The cover seems to serve as an air channel/duct which leads to the side fan.

Pics!!!

Yes, Pm sent.
(regarding 9.0 vs tfb750)

I for one would love to hear about this.....

OK, I finally got the issues taken care of with my Berg HT322 and got to run the Shuttle 9.0 through it last night for rehearsal. A few notable things...

1) The sax player helped me carry in my gear last night, and, with my little case containing the Shuttle in his hand, asked, "so where is this new head you've been raving about?" He had a puzzled look on his face when I told him he was holding it in his hand.

2) The same sax player's eyes got huge when I hit the first note and had to reach over to turn it down. The master was at 50%.

3) After two hours of rehearsing at a decent volume, I touched the top of the amp and it was still completely cool to the touch.

4) I didn't think I was going to want the footswitch other than maybe for muting for tuning, but I did end up kicking in the EQ filters a few different times for different sounds and I think I will probably end up ordering one.

5) A volume boost for solos would have been nice.

6) The Shuttle sounds great. First amp I've ever used with my Berg cab that seems to work well at any volume. I may not have to sonically assault the first row anymore to get my tone. And my slapping seems to cut through better.

Tonight I start integrating my AdrenaLinn III into the mix. Things are about to get interesting...
