Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 discussion thread

Well i tried the 9.0 today and walked out with a LM3 and AE210 having part exed my Shuttle Combo

Ok, but can you tell us WHY? What did you like and not like about the shuttle, and what were the final deciding factors in your purchase. What tone profile were you looking for, and why did the LMIII do it better, or was it a form/function decision?

I've had a LMII since last year and love it. Friday I ordered a GB 9.0 so it should arrive this week, and I should be able to gig it within two weeks. I'll share my review as against the MB when I've had a chance to put the 9.0 through the paces.

I ordered one today on Musiciansfriend.com (got 15% off as part of the Cyber Monday sale!). Waiting impatiently! :hyper:

I tried out the Markbass LMIII, F1, and SD800, the GK MB2-500, the TC Electronics 450, and the Carvin BX500 over the weekend. To my surprise, I liked the Carvin best, so I bought it! However, after gigging with it, I decided that the tone is too flat/clean sounding for my tastes. From what I understand, the Shuttle heads impart more of their own character to a rig, so I am returning the Carvin.

I really hope that the 9.0 turns out to be "the one" (then again, I have said the same about countless young ladies I have dated in the past, but none of them turned out to be what I hoped :rollno:).

OK, I received my 9.0 today. I spent about 2 hours A/B'ing the 9.0 with the shuttle 6.0, and a 2008 Jazz deluxe 5, and Berg AE410. So far, the 9.0 definitely has more booty down low. With all settings flat, the 9.0 has noticeably more low end. It actually translates into a more punchy sound across the board. I can get both amps to sound similar if I boost the lows on the 6.0 and turn the treble down some, similar but not exact. They are very very similar, but distinctly different. It could be from the tube coloration as well, we all know even the same exact tube type from the same manufacturer can sound slightly different. I kind of prefer the 6.0's slightly gritty/tube sound in the mids/high mids region with my Fender Jazz, seems the 6.0 is ever so slightly more organic sounding in that area, seems to sing more. Whereas the 9.0 sounds amazing where we play the most..on the B, E, and A strings due to it's added girth and punchiness to each note. The added volume, girth(dare I say..more lead sled-ish), and punch make the 9.0 a winner so far. The real test will be this friday night. I'm playing a small/medium bar gig with a loud rock band. The one thing I notice is that the 9.0 makes the AE410 sound much more even across the board, it makes the ae410 sound slightly more like a traditional cab when set flat, which is a good thing. I have on occasion used my db750 or DCM1500 as a poweramp with the 6.0, and the 9.0 gets me closer to that sound/feel. I'll report back in after friday's gig for an 'in the mix' real world review.

I had a sort of similar experience to sk8 here in the UK. I received mine and it appeared to be a problem with the amp sitting flat, I checked it wasn't the feet or the surface.

So, dealer said I can try another. For some reason it did not wow me like the lm3, even after tweaking. I still wanted another amp though.

I have decided to cave in and look at the more expensive rh450, so I will be exchanging the shuttle.

Genz and my store gave great customer service, but I think for me, I found the 9.0 a little too clinical. Some people love that though!

Thanks for the advice, sometimes it takes a while to find the right amp.

Can anyone confirm that this amp houses the larger B&O ICEpower module?

I took a peek under the hood today. I'm not sure what power module it is, but it is definitely bigger than the 6.0's. The 6.0's power module board is about 2/3's or 3/4's the size of the 9.0's. From what I can see, the 2 main Capacitor's are a good deal larger as well. Most of the 9.0's power board is under a black plastic 'c' cover with a 'patent pending' sticker on it held down by 4 screws. I'm not removing the screws. The cover seems to serve as an air channel/duct which leads to the side fan.

Hi guys. Any reviews from those that bought them in the UK? Very interested in this amp. Small, has the power but can it really do it. Big and phat preferably. Just thought I'd ask.

Just recieved mine yesterday :hyper: (I understand they've only just arrived in the UK a few days ago). I only spent a short time playing last night, but my first impression was that it really hit the spot for me. The low mid voicing that people have been going on about differing from the 6 is right up my alley.

I'm not really a knob turner, so there's pleanty for me on this to try and get my head round, but I got it to sound nice and thick with punch, as well as some other decent tones that I may never use, but good to know they are there.

I didnt go for the foot switch as i dont see the point, and the preset 'mid scoop' etc dont do a lot for me. I tend to set up and play, then run any effects as necessary.

Unfortunately I couldnt really push it too hard at home, but hopefully getting into a rehearsal room this weekend to open it up properly and hear it in a band context. This is my first genz product, and first impression outside of a shop is great, but time will tell i guess.

Hey man - yes I can give you a quick review - though sadly I've not had the chance to run this at high volume in a rehearsal or gig setting yet.

I'm a huge Epifani fan and was chuffed to bits when I finally laid my hands on a UL502 a couple of years ago - I got it pretty much half price, used but in mint condition. And since I've really considered that 'my sound' - really warm and great for 'modern' fingerstyle (a la Garrison or Feraud). So this is where I was coming from when I first tried a Shuttle 3.0 in the store here in London - the clarity and purity of the tone just blew me away and that was running through an Epi 110...

So I've had my Shuttle 9.0 for a week now and I've not plugged the 502 in since - I want to keep this head as it's a classic amp and I'll regret it if I sell it - but the GB 9 is so nice. I've noticed just how quick the tone is - I can tap on my 5 string now (not that I do it much) but whereas the 502 seemed a bit wooly and would give me a less focused tone, the GB 9 just pings out every note as clear as a bell with lots of definition, punch, tone etc.

I have three great basses - each one sounds great sent direct into a studio board or a PA - so with that now as my starting point with the GB plus the added Tube growl and some sublte but very noticable bass booty and mid punch the amp is doing everything I want tonally. I love a very precise solo tone which I was finding the Epi very mid-scooped for some reason - with the GB the tone is flatter but more defined, yet still with warmth and a whole heap of air that lets each note breathe.

Having so much power under the hood as well is like sitting in a Ferrari in rush hour traffic - knowing that you might be coasting along at the legal speed limit - but as soon as you want to put your foot down then the beast under the bonnet is just going to keep on giving... even though my Epi 210 it's crazy loud - I seriously doubt I'll ever need a bigger cab for this baby - the GB just sounds massive. I didn't get a chance t try the GB 6.0 out but so far the enhanced low frequencies of the 9.0 are impressive and my B string just rings like a bell - it's definitely phat.

I've got some small gigs coming up in the new year so I'm looking forward to taking it out for those and hopefully I'll be doing some bigger venues too - with PA support - so again it'll be interesting to see how it handles those situations. The funny thing is that the reason I'm now a GB owner is because the last big gig I did I just had tp take my 502 with me (along with my bass) I had to use the tube (subway) here in London and get across town with the amp in it's carry case/rack. It was so heavy and bulky in the car that I was riding in after, that it all made me think - there are so many small lightwaight options now - I need to join the 21st century here! My next dilema is finding a cab to go with the GB 9 for small gigs - I'm considering a Berg HT112 or an Acme Low B 10" - but it's time to do my tax return so I won't be buying either until I'm all square with The Man...

Hope that helps and I'll keep you all posted on my progress with the 9 - I love ti so far - I hope it kicks as much butt on a gig - I don't doubt it will - I just can't wait to try it out.

Hi- First off, thanks for your business. You said you aren't a "knob turner". So with that in mind, I just want to mention that our EQ is quite powerful. ....a couple of clicks does quite a bit.

I'd start with everything at 12:00 and go from there. Many find 2:00 o clock on the lows to be a good place.

I highly encourage using the mid section to boost low-mids rather than cutting out higher mids. ...FWIW.

Thanks again,
Roger

just got mine last night , haven't tried it with all the basses or cabs yet , did try the Sadowsky 5 , the MTD 535 , and the CB single cut 5 fretless , wow like people have said the notes just pop off the strings like no other amp i've used , I ran it thru my epifani ul210 , berg 210 and the monster berg ht322 , all sounded great , im really impressed so far , I bought a little mark2 head a little over a year ago and it has been fine but when I first got it the tone just wasn't me , although I have used it a bunch and will keep it for a spare , right after I bought it I was in a music store and tried the shuttle 6.0 with the 12 and thought as soon as I heard the tone , I thought , man I should have bought one of these , as people say to each their own , there both great heads , I just love a more clear punchy tone and the shuttle has it , I have found over the 25 years of playing bass this tone with a band will always sound and cut thru better , I honestly have never heard my B strings sound so clear , open strings sound amazing , we have a few gig's coming up soon and I will report again , thanks for all the input TB people
