Genz Benz Streamliner-Pt 2

I love Ed's review(s)!

Nice comparison between the Streamliner and the 9.2. It's interesting that he notes they have "very different personalities". I'm listening here with my high-end cans, and I don't hear that much difference, with the 9.2 being a bit brighter. Both sound great though.

I'm gassing with the rest of you guys for a new toy, but I've concluded I need to hear this in person before I'd consider buying one. I'm pretty happy with the 6.0, so maybe I'm already set. :)

All types. I grew up old school p-bass tube amps etc. Lean toward the fatter more organic sounds.

The clean sound of the SL is just so solid and fat. I have no interest in overdrive at all.

When I was checking this amp out at NAMM, I heard both Jazz and P basses used. Both sounded equally good which is rare without some tone adjustment for each bass. However, as I said before.... Playing the P bass through this head and the 1x15 horn and 1x12, 2x8 horn boxes made me smile. Really!

We were just across from the Toca percussion booth. There were usually at least a few guys setting up rhythmic figures for us to play with. Made it much more fun to check out the heads as well as giving some idea of how the stuff might sound with other instruments.

As much as I loved this amp with the P bass, I'm not sure it would replace my 9.0. More like augment it. In a number musical styles, I think these heads will become quite popular.

Hey Capt Wally! How you been bro? You think the 9.2 or Streamliner will replace your 6.0? I was really impressed with the Streamliner clean tones and through my average headphone cans, I could easily hear a warmer, smoother tone from the Streamliner. It sounded like it had more presence. The 9.2 to my ears sounded brighter, thinner. BUT (Big but here) ....I always EQ the amp and flat setting probably does not showcase it at its best. So that said, I'm sure they are both great!

Hey, hey! Good to "see" you!

No plans yet to buy... yet. Ok, you prompted me to go back and listen. I hear what you're saying; the Streamliner is definitely fatter and warmer. The 9.2 is more precise and crisper. Hmmm...maybe if it combines the character of GB with the balls/fullness of something like the LM2, it's a big winner.

One of my favorite sounding rigs was the Neo-Pak preamp going into the LM2.

Darn you. Not helping my GAS.

Hey KJ let me know if the tightness of the lowend is comparable to the F500 but have clean tube warmth?

Will do. I'll mess around with it this afternoon for a while, take a few photo's, and put up my initial thoughts late this afternoon, and then put up a couple of clips tomorrow, focusing on 'clean but warm tone' between the Streamliner and various gain settings, the RH450 with various tubetone settings, and the F500 with various VLE settings (the LMII/III would be a bit more of an apples to apples comparison... i.e., warm, clean, fat voicing.... but that head is in another location at the moment).

:bassist:

Looking forward to your views on how it compares to the RH450!

It KILLS the 450.....

I used acoustic image amps for years. Still have them. Won't be selling them. They are amazing.

But I wanted a little more fatness so I got the Classic 450. I still prefer some of the cleanness of the AI but the 450 has more girth and fullness so I have been using it as my main amp.

Went to Bass NW yesterday, hooked up the SL 900 to an Uber 210 and Dyamm !!! Just fat, fat fat, but clean !!!!! It really was like Ed said: You can't get a bad sound out of this thing.

It won't be for everyone of course. I think alot of guys that are happy with their shutlles will stick with them.

Got my new Uber 210 cab home and running the 450 through it and I am now in cab heaven. Just waiting for the truck to bring my SL 900

Was that 450 comparison with the same cab?

It looks to me like the advantage over the 450 will be the treble extension that is controllable on the Streamliner, in addition to a good bit more power of course. I was one of the RH450 tweak beta testers, along with others in this thread, and we all advised TC to include their "Tweetertone" control on their newer heads. The 450's sound wonderful, but you can't dial in an extended treble response. That vintage taper is built into the head's voicing. I really dig that a majority of the time, but you can't get out of it when you want something more. It looks to me like the Streamliner gives you a bit more flexibility.

As for an overdrive comparison between the two, I obviously can't do that yet as I don't have a Streamliner, but IMHO this is a hard one because people seem to have very picky tastes about overdrive. Some love one and hate another. From what I heard on Ed's video, the 450 has an overdrive that I like better as it sounds more Ampeg-like versus the Streamliner which seemed to have a fuzzier type of tone. I wouldn't count on a video to really base a sound opinion though. And even then, I wouldn't really use Streamliner for overdrive much myself as I prefer pedals for this (exception being the RH450 because of the programability). The Streamliner sounded like it had a much fatter, buttery kind of clean tone which I would prefer. I LOVE the SA200, and this did remind me of it on the video. I just won't know until I can get my hands on one. I don't really want to purchase a 3rd amp at this point, and I'm not sure that I want to sell my Shuttle 9.0 just for a chacne to try a Streamliner. My RH450 is going nowhere though, simply because it fills a void that no other head can fill for me right now. However, I prefer my 9.0 to the RH450 at the moment because of raw power and clean top-end. I think the Streamliner would be the ticket for me honestly, but GAS hasn't built enough to cause me to do something drastic. That could change in the next day or two as you guys start posting all these reports.

Ed Friedland the Bass Whisper can't say more good things about the Genz Benz Streamliner 900, he just posted his video review and it's got me considering trading in my Mesa Boggie M-Pulse 600.

I love the simplicity of the controls, the size of the 900 and the output is killer. And if Ed's sold and using this as his go to rig then I'm in.
