Genz Benz Streamliner-Pt 2

Pretty easy to just plug one head in and unplug the other in a clip... takes maybe 10 seconds:smug: Been doing it for over a year now. I will be A/Bing the RH450 and the Streamliner when mine arrives (my guess is, Friday with the weather), especially focusing on a low level of tube emulation of the RH450 and the 'slightly' pushed tone of the Streamliner (versus just pure clean and pure overdrive). I again, like what I hear so far!

All you need to do Ken is figure out how to speak/talk LOUD enough that we can hear what you are saying. The bass demo's however are great and WELL appreciated! Very helpful! :-)

That seems very dependent on the playback system. However, my more recent clips are a bit more balanced. I'm a big fan of demo'ing the tone of rigs and basses at 'gig' volume... we all know that things sound a bit different cranked up. That results in the autolimiting of my recorder to lower the voice a bit. However, I'm positioning myself a bit closer and in a more direct line of site to the recording mic, which helps a bit, and I'm recording the clips at slightly lower volume, although still cranked pretty well... the only way to really communicate the tone of something IMO.

I'm also recording my clips a bit off axis now, which is again, IMO, a more realistic representation of what stuff sounds like in 'reality'.

Nice to have more and more guys recording clips in various ways (solo, like me, and in live settings, etc.). I'm not a big fan of recording demo's with tracks... kind of the 'worst of all worlds' for me... that highly compressed programmed material doesn't really emulate a true live mix very well, and it can tend to cover up nuances in the instrument/rig that might be important to those considering. However, I've done it a variety of ways, and the more data points, the better:bassist:

It's blowing pretty hard here in upstate NY but, my shuttle 12.0 arrived yesterday ahead of the storm. Great amp! Ken, please do a clip with the genz and thundchild. It hopefully help while Im waiting for my TC to be built. Or, make it worse. :)

Very nice job Ed!

I'm impressed with the Streamliner's clean tone -- good lows and beefy lower midrange.

Someone mentioned the ShuttleMax 9.2 sounding sterile by comparison -- I would just say that was with all the controls set flat.

Few people would play live with an amp that sounds that way set flat (me included) -- minor tweaks and you can bring in plenty of warmth and solid low end.

Then put the recorder about 4 feet in front of the cab and at ear level. THAT would be reality!!!!
Wait...with you for ear level, that would be like what, 4 feet off the floor. Tell ya what, just do this, 4 feet in front and 5'6" off the floor.
You may need a chair to stand on to adjust things though....;)

I think Ed does the best job of reviewing/demoing product of anyone I've seen. Granted, there's only so much you can do when it's heard online through little speakers, etc., but Ed does a great job of trying to show different settings and such - be it amps, effects or basses. You may or may not like what you hear and that's fine. I always want to go practice after I watch one, and I often can justify just about every product he demo's. Great job Ed.
+1 to this. Great job, Ed, thank you!

I expect there are more tones to explore in this amp, of course, but really enjoyed the way you demo'd the ones you chose. I've listened to the clip twice. Major kudos for the Shuttle/Streamliner comparison! I was just about to push the video back to listen again when the alternating bits started.:D

My impressions: The clean tone's very nice, but I prefer my Walkabout for now on that front. (An in-person A/B could very well change my mind, though.) The distorted tone was too much for what I normally do, but I can see it being useful for a lot of folks.

I wonder if there's a way to achieve an "in-between" sound, kind of like my Walkabout when the gain's approaching 1 pm or when my V-4B is right on the edge of being overdriven. Perhaps with the Streamliner's gain knob pushed way up and the high gain button disengaged? Or with the button on and the knob turned way down? It's quite possible I don't understand how these two controls interact.

You have gain pot, volume pot, and a gain switch along with a master volume and your eq. You can dial in most any flavor of grit between those. I did a quick and dirty test at NAMM and there is plenty of room between clean and facemelt. I'm really looking forward to finding a few "edge of breakup" tones with the amp.

While it might be nice to have two channels, it sounds like it won't be straightforward. Comparing it to the MB Fusion is logical, but the two channels there are not available as an "instant grit" application as there is a slight delay when switching. It is useful for dialing up two different drive levels, but I'm not crazy about the GK when you crank the preamp as it tends more towards "harsh" rather than "warm grit" to my ears. But depends on your application and your ears. And your dictionary definitions...

I keep telling myself I'm not a "tube" guy, and there are many "tube" amps I don't like, but this one sounds amazing. Of course, as I said, Ed could make almost any rig sound amazing.

I was an Intern at Level 3, I was told the myth is unfortunately true.
It is not, and Level 3 has no way of verifying it's authenticity. I've been in this industry (IT, not porn) for 15 years. Porn does drive a lot of new technology, particularly with video delivery. That's a lot different from saying that the primary usage of the internet is porn.

Not to be contrary, but what the hell does this side bar have to do with a Genz Benz Streamliner amplifier? It's not even closely related to the topic. Things that make me go .....take it to PM's or something.

Sorry guys. I am more interested in GB Streamliner conversations.

The beauty is that the amp has Gain knobs as well as the Gain Button.. I am sure there are mucho levels of "in between" levels of grit that can be achieved with just a little bit of hands on tweaking..
I like clean too, but more often lately i need that just on the edge of clean and slight tube roll over... And what i heard from Eds demo , it can be there...What was really nice was his AB to the MAX 9.2 12:00 setting... you can really hear the difference between the two amps...
Looking forward to it..

It's just conversation, which has an evolutionary nature. Just responding to comments made by others as to why Ed's video wasn't playing at first. Not trying to be contrary either by the way. I'm also interested in Streamliner comments, which is what led us down the whole internet porn conversation in the first place! :D

Back on topic! There are thread police here!

The shuttle 9.0 and the Streamliner 900 are rated at 900 watts into 4 ohms, right? How does the achievable clean volume compare to a big-sounding amp with similar wattage, for instance a DB750?

Not that I EVER needed to crank my DB750 up, but I loved the headroom, the amp never ever felt like it hit the ceiling when I dug in. Do you get the same feeling from these amps?
