Genz Benz Streamliner-Pt 2

For over drive it is simple. Turn your tweeters off, use a passive Bass, and dime the input gain. :bassist:

While I have not heard the Streamliner the grit available on a Shuttle 9.0 is pretty nice. Perfect for that cranked Tube amp tone. I hope the Streamliner's input sensitivity is close to the same as my Shuttle 9.0, for if I want insane amounts of gain I use a pedal.

An OCD V3 sounds especially good into my Shuttle 9.0.

"dime the input gain"

Well, depends how much tube flavor you want to add.
Also, with the Streamliner, there's both gain, and input gain ahead of the master.

Should allow a lot of room for nice variations.

I'm pretty sure the amount of tube flavor is not controlled by the level settings. In other words your full into the tubes all the time.

Not having that be user adjustable would be a disappointment, to me.
The control layout would seem to indicate a lot of adjustablility...

+1 As Red Planet mentions, it is a tube pre, so you will have the tubes in the circuit all the time. However, with the very nice pre gain, post gain and master controls (like on all the other Shuttle tube pre's), you should have the ability to go from VERY clean (I hope) to full out snarl while easily controlling both the absolute volume, and just as importantly, the level of signal hitting the EQ and the rest of the preamp circuitry.

And, more similar to the Max heads than the Shuttle heads, I assume they have the input gain set a bit hotter than the Shuttle heads (which have no input pads), and allow the user to 'pad down' the input signal if needed.

As has been discussed, one of the things about the Shuttle amps (the non-max versions) is that the input gain level is set pretty low, and if you have a relatively soft touch and/or low output instrument, it is hard to really push that tube into even minimal break-up. That should not be the case with the Streamliner.

And again:p, regarding demo'ing the full tube break-up snarl of this amp, my hesitance is not on the mechanics of the knobs, but rather my playing approach.... it's like asking a guy to demo a hi fi slap sound who plays hard rock with a PBass and a pick. Don't get me wrong, I'll dial that tweeter down and crank that pre when I get it, but I look forward to having a player that really lives that tone and style to really represent that part of this amp in a demo.

There is a heck of a lot of adjustment to be had with the Genz Benz amps, especially with this one. The input gain pad, gain level, and signal level (pre EQ) allow for quite a bit of tonal inflections.

The tubes though are full on all of the time. The signal goes through all three tubes all the time. No adjustment for that as this is an all tube preamp. There is no SS pre to blend to. It's all tube all the time.

We were typing at the same time:p

I get that; yessir, I do.
But, with both gain, and input level controls, it should be very easy to dial in tube saturation.

I'd think...

No snow here, but it was 27 degrees outside this morning, on the freakin' Gulf Coast! I need to move further south I guess, but that means moving back to South Florida. I'm not sure it's worth that!

I've noticed a huge difference in the change of sound with my GBE 500H with changing tubes. I actually put in a 12AT7 in place of the 12AX7 and the sound went from grindy to thick and thumpy.

Do you think that different combinations of tubes (ex 2 12AX7 and 1 12AU7) would impact the sound of the preamp?

We got blasted two weeks in a row. Got any where from 6 to 8 inches. Temps are not rising, roads are screwed.

Prolly not bad at Michigan specs but our DOT is not equipped to handle this crap down here. :help:

This amp is going to be a tube rollers delight. :hyper:

I have a 1955 Mullard in my Shuttle 9.0 and man does it sound nice.

I recently picked up a few of the modern day Mullards. These are the Blackburn Tech Tubes manufactured in the original Mullard factory. I've not tried them yet (waiting on my Streamliner). Too bad these folks went out of business shortly after they got all the kinks worked out of these tubes. They started shipping them in 09 and went into bankruptcy in 09. :crying:

This is what I'll be installing in my Streamliner.

I believe it is safe to assume the input sensitivity is low on the Strealiner since it has the Pad button.

I believe the input sensitivity is just right on the Shuttles. I do agree it has to do with your playing as to what you prefer but I think to set the sensitivity unusually hi (like MB) is to strangle a player and relegate them to keeping the preamp at very low knob settings.

IMO we do not massage the Bass, we play it. The Bass is not some sort of instrument that is played while eating Crumpets and drinking Tea. It is an instrument that the mere thought of playing brings on aggression.

Yes there is nothing better than the finesse of an Upright Bass line on I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water but it is an act of violence to play Caledonia. :D
