I saw FZ in '72; the Mahavishnu Orchestra opened the show!

I finally got to see ZPZ in '12, as they opened for RTF. Great show and brought back some wonderful memories (those that I could remember :D).

The only time I got to see him live was in 1970, probably with the same lineup. They played a bunch of the music from 200 Motels. I'll never forget the venue. It was a huge old cathedral in Grand Rapids, MI, with theater seating and a balcony on 3 sides. There was a huge throne at the back of the stage right in the middle that was part of the original cathedral, and you know who was sitting in it before the show, gazing out over the crowd and flipping the bird anytime a spotlight hit him. The show left a big impression on an 18 year old college freshman...

1971-72 I was 22 years old and that's when I discovered Zappa. Changed my whole perspective and attitude on music, life and society. For the better, I think. I was playing in a band named "Out To Lunch" as in the lyric from Zappa's "Oh No". Our favorite tune on our set list was "Orange County Lumber Truck" - the long version. We were playing in the kind of dives that would have made Frank proud. Think the barroom from the movie "Barfly". I'm still close friends with the keyboard player and drummer from that band, and still working on music with them.
After reading this thread I just played some excepts from the "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" album for my 14 year old daughter who is an aspiring song writer. I made no comments first, just played it. Her reaction: "Wow, this guy has issues", "Weird, very weird", "Some great music".

Indeed.

I just made a less than oblique reference in another thread to the obvious rampant uptick in the feral feline avatar population that I'm sure Nobody is enjoying it in spite my personal displeasure. The evidence is right here on this page! It continues unabated across this litter box we call home. And by the way the back line I had to endure last night made me think I was playing my Elrick through a Lafayette catalog guitar amp. (how's that for dating myself, I'll bet half the GOF's here are too young to have seen a Lafayette catalog)

I'd like in...63 and grumpy. BTW, first time I saw Zappa was with the Mothers in Central Park, Schaffer Concerts, think it was '67 or '68. Then saw him at the Filmore (East that is) a few times on Mother's Day. When Else???? Also assorted times with Flo & Eddie and various other tours.
I also remember having a Lafayette amp for my stereo...vinyl of course.
