I notice that for the LaBella nylon tapes are 32.25", you need a 31" (?) scale. If you could find a shorter replacement tailpiece, the longer scale string might fit. The ball ends would be moved back. It doesn't appear that Chowny sells one but it never hurts to ask.

We don't sell a shorter tailpiece. However 31" scale strings are probably too short. All our short scale basses take a medium scale string.

I was going to say to put some peanuts in shell out in the yard, the squirrel will not be able to resist coming into Odin’s territory. Then he will be able to exact his revenge. On the other hand, geese probably like peanuts as well so they will be attracted.

I may have mentioned it b4, but my Ibby is a 30.5"scale but the 'claw' is a coupla inches behind the bridge so I hafta to use medium scale on it. Some people have suggested putting an extra ball from old strings in front of the ball on new strings for spacing. BTW, so far I'm liking the DTF's. View attachment 3739691

The inner diameter of the ball would probably be too small for the string to slip through to get to the ball end for stacking, but a metal bead or tube might work if you could find the right size.

Could you install the ball end on the bridge side of the tailpiece and wrap the string around the top? Some guitars have it like this, they call it "top wraping". It would affect the angle of the string as it goes to the bridge which could be a problem. The tailpiece would have to be screwed down as low as it can go. Without the correct tool, those screw slots can indent from a screwdriver a little too easily.

But since you already have a solution....

Yeah, I mentioned the 'extra ball' thing for others to consider. After discovering that short scale wouldn't correctly fit my Ibby, I check listed string lengths b4 buying. Also for my other basses.(SS strings' silks overhang the nut on E and G-2+2 headstock)

It didn't really bother me on the first SS set I installed unless I played 1st fret F or Ab. Felt odd and sorta muffled.
The med. scale DTF's fit fine. No overlap, but plenty of silk to wrap 'round the post.

FWIW, the 49/69/89/109 set fit the Ibby's nut slots with no problems or surgery. The .004/string isn't much larger but I felt the smaller diameter G was lacking depth. Not now.

Well, I packed up my Sterling by Ernie Ball bass tonight after I received my return label. Tomorrow or Thursday it goes out and I get my refund. Last year, Guitar Center accidentally sent me an Ibanez Mikro Bass bag. I called them and they said keep it--more expensive to return it. It's still in the plastic package and is begging to hold a bass. I found a Mikro lefty on eBay and I'm considering pulling the trigger.

The only issue is about five years ago I bought an Ibby Mikro and in less than a month it went back because it was as heavy as my full sized Ibby's. Does anyone know if that's changed? I think I read they're using lightweight basswood now?

@the harp unstrung thanks for your reply. I'm glad it's lighter, must be one of the newer ones. I'm no weakling or anything, but I wanted to keep it by my recliner when wife Carey goes to bed I could strum a little. Also like your Roland bass combo!

As I am sure GonePlaid is fully aware Gibson SG Bass owners have been using ball ends for quite awhile to relieve the wrappings from the saddle, nut or both. It has been suggested many times on TB. I used that method until due to different reasons I pulled the trigger on a Hipshot Supertone bridge on my SG Standard Bass. So it is not a new idea. Not all string ball ends work and it does look clunky but it does work at least on my SG bass. I have no experience with Ibby's.

I have to say, and please take this as the compliment intended.
This has to be the most entertaining thread on TB at least for me. Since returning from my various journeys and hospital forays catching up has been at the least fun. Posts have ranged from please help me with my bass or amp, health issues, military reminiscing, british isles, porn stars, bird excrement, to string ball ends.
I have things to do as my daughter reminds me, but if I start reading the eclectic posts on this thread responsibilities go out the window. No one to blame but me BUT I would rather read the various posts here than Clean My Room.(Granddaughter is coming to celebrate my B-Day on the 16th).
Please keep it up as you all are making a old man's recovery very enlightening.
