For many years, along South Boulder Road there has hung the Boulder Wind Guage. A cinder block on a 4 foot length of chain hanging from a 12 foot steel pole. I have seen that chain at a 15 degree angle once. I do not frequent that route.

I had a summer place in Lafayette, between Arapahoe and Baseline. Pretty much avoided S. Boulder Rd. Never saw that Wind Gauge. Or if I did, I didn't know what I was looking at. 15° angle? Time to look for a basement.

Right click anywhere on the tool bar. Then click on "News And Inserts->" in the pop-up menu. Then click on "Turn Off". Voila; the weather icon on the toolbar is GONE!

Aaauuuggh! Voila! Is the trending app that's turning everybody online into Pixar characters who, co-incidentally, look years, or decades younger than they really are. Sheesh! It's one giant leap into the fantasy world that is online social media!

Hear, hear! Rant on - the last two PC's I've purchased have an inescapable set-up wizard that forces you to set up a Microsoft account. It's digital tyranny. I'm bein' repressed!!!!!!!

You have to create an MS acct but you can set up and use a local user ID on your PC. With the local user ID you don't have to sign in to Microsoft to use the PC.

I don't sign in unless I get something from the MS Store or use support. Windows update will work without being signed in to MS.

If my computer does what I ask of it — and that is very little given current computing capabilities — I'm reasonably content. I've been with computers since before there were operating systems. My main takeaway in this lifetime is computers do not make my life simpler, or better, or happier. I am grateful computers do math well, and apparently enjoy it. They can have it. HaHa Only Serious. There is absolutely no reason for me to spend time messing with math when a computer calculates the correct answer more or less instantaneously. That said, a calculator is just fine for all my actual needs. Spreadsheets can go to blazes.

It's a tool but it has pretty much become a requirement to manage stuff in your life. We don't absolutely need it but it sure makes stuff easier to manage.

If it's on the main part of the task bar, right click the icon then UNPIN.

If it's in the little pop up section (the ^ icon on the far right), right click the ^ - TASK BAR SETTINGS - TURN SYSTEM ICONS ON OR OFF - click the switches to turn them off/on.

Yeah, on my last big MS update I was unpleasantly surprised to find a new pop up window when I hovered over the toolbar. Also sick of the worthless message icon in the bottom right that insists on coming back even though I tell it to go away permanently.

You can't get rid of the notifications center. It's useful at times but can be annoying.

Open the notifications box. At the top of the pop out click MANAGE NOTIFICATIONS. Select/deselect what you do/do not want to see.

When I bought my last laptop it was one of the few still loaded with Win7. The IT fellow that steered me to it also fixed it so that MS could not stealthy load Win 10 on it. He said if you don’t it will download it whether or not you wanted it, even if you did not implement it it would occupy your hard drive. And that is a lot of memory used up.

You can go into Explorer, find the WIN10 download folder and delete it. I don't remember the name of the folder Win10 is pretty stable these days BUT it will require more resources to run. I would not run it on anything less than an Intel i5 series with at least 8mb memory.

I've had it on a Dell XPS 8500 for several years. It came with Win7 then I upgraded to 8.1 then 10.
i5 - 3.1GHz. I recently upgraded mem from 8 to 16. It's fast enough for what I do. I don't do gaming.

This is the first I've been in an actual crowd of living human beings since lockdown. It's a cool morning at the growers' market. The gruff guy is still gruff, but not too gruff to sell me a bone for Odin. And returning with the great treasures of open air shopping, I notice

What I notice is a lot of people didn't take well to lockdown. On the surface things look the same but ... ah but I can take weekly shopping trips. And it's all the same core crowd at the same hour. Typically I circle the lot before I buy anything. Back in the old country we watch the master chef to see where he buys, and that lucky vendor will be sold out before the sun's over the top of the trees.

Whulp this is my old country now, I'll have to do and find it fascinating to know who's ̶h̶o̶w̶ who. I know who I buy from. That I buy from the gruff guy who is held by some in my field of acquaintance to be that mechanism required to pass wind. Funny old world.

@Winslow yup the pilot was the gold standard in disposable pens. Desk pens connected to the base with a chain are a fixture in banks that, if they still exist, don't exist in any recognizable form.

Our handwriting teacher who has rather a bit of a temper

presents a cardboard tray of "good" pens for our school lessons in cursive. They are blue ballpoint pens with long tails. The grip is like the grip on the Pilot.

Within a couple school years the boys are sent off to learn how to print neatly in drafting classes. To the typewriter for me, back row of the classroom with a huge black manual typewriter. There are no letters on the keys. The diagram of the typewriter keyboard is above the blackboard, and that's where I learn to look to type.

Mayhap at university one earns a bit of coin typing papers for guys who print their finals neatly enough to decipher.

To buy a ream of paper is nothing at all. It's rag-content paper, really good, and affordable to students. Can barely find that today. Paper making has become as boutique as any industry ... bell goes off we have a paper maker in an art colony mentioned way upthread and IIRC I said someone who makes his own paper and casts his own type really needs a sex life

I got an F in hand writing in the fifth grade. Writing ability is definitely not genetic. My mom had beautiful hand writing and my dad wasn't too shabby either. I transitioned to printing many years ago especially after getting into IT. My signature is printing with a cursive flair. Gee, that sounds impressive!

Rain again yesterday. The humility was 99% at about 8am. It's dropped to 73% now. That will go well with the mid-90 temps today. Hello summer!

Grass is up since we were out of town. I'll have to use the bag on the mower for parts of the yard. Hope it drys out a little by late today.
