I struggled with faster tempos some years ago until a bass player who knew a lot more than me said to use a lighter touch on the plucking hand - electric and upright. By golly, he was right!

I used to really dig in on faster tunes - timing suffered, hand hurt, tone was bad. I think that's the bass player's trifecta.

When I started playing in '67, no one taught me-'cept me-to play lightly and let the amp provide the volume. Not likely to break 54 y/o habits.

I have known Jim Saye since 2nd grade. The law forced the door of his house today and found him in bed. They said about 3 days since he died. Jim had 2 boys, oldest about 13. They're with Mom, Jimmy's ex wife. I am stunned.

And don't keep practicing stuff you already play well. Not saying to forget it but no need to rehash old stuff. That's not learning anything new or moving your playing forward. I usually work on stuff that's just a little beyond my abilities. I learn something new with less frustration. And on top of that I don't practice nearly enough.

Well, you could learn different ways to the play those mistakes. Maybe there is another fingering pattern to make it easier.

This one, too. We played it a few ticks faster but this is pretty close.

Been a fan of Hank Mobley for a long time. As Leonard Feather said, he's the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone". I own a number of his releases, but my fav is the Mosaic Records numbered set "The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions". I own 10-12 of the Mosaic sets. The have some of the best sound improvement of old recordings I've ever heard. At least half of those sets are long OOP and are selling for north of $400 for a 7-8 disk set.

Saw two poodles with what looked like fresh haircuts on my way home today. One had nail polish on. Tis the season for visits to the spa.

It was veterinarian day today for us. We spent $350 getting diagnostic work up on a cat only to have there be nothing wrong with him. He had been throwing up after just about every meal for the last 5 days. Its not hair from self-grooming; it is food and at times clear liquid (kinda foamy like saliva)
He does have other weird neurotic habits. He acts very normal in between these events. Still interacts, likes his belly rubbed, etc...
All cats throw up for various reasons and it is considered normal but his was out of character.
Part of the joy I guess.
