I sincerely hope these special editions make it to production as well. So far, there has been no other indication of that happening. The 2018 bass category on Gibson's official site remains non existent. I have to believe there must be someone who knows something is up for that article to have seen the light of day though.

On the related note, any one knows what sounds similarly to a ripper and comfortable to play?
I own a T-bird and it sounds very good to me with that signature nosy growl, but not being a very tall person, I am sometimes having hard time reaching tuners from a standing position.

I've not played a ripper, so I don't really know what would sound like it (if anything). If you can try out a 2013 or 2017 model EB, I think they have a very good sound, and I can get a very nice growly tone from mine. Since the 2017's upper horn reaches almost to the 12th fret, the bass hangs with the headstock closer to the body, which makes reaching the tuning keys easier than on a T-bird.
A magic 8 ball would probably provide the best answer. Pretty sure that's what Gibson uses for decision making.

Rippers are tough to describe. I love em, but they're tough to describe. The closest thing I can think of is a Peavey T-40. Really versatile for a passive bass. They can do a pretty convincing Ric thing and can get you into Ripper territory. Oh yeah, you also need a forklift to pick one up 
Great! Basically started as an A.M.P. this is what became Thunderfunk. Dave Funk ended up buying the leftover stock of amps and parts from Gibson, upgraded several components and Thunderfunk was born. Or so the story goes. If you compare the layout of the two it definitely adds up. The front end of the amp was originally designed by the guys who eventually started SWR and Eden.
Amp actually belongs to an old friend who hasn't played for years. He offered it to me to use several years ago and I finally took him up on the offer. Have been looking a lower power amp to use (1000 watts tends to be overkill for me).
Controls are very similar to a modern Thunderfunk. Had a 550 for awhile and it seemed a little tighter to me but the Gibson still sounds very good and has all the power I need for most gigs. Lits of EQ flexibility though i usually prefer simpler controls for gigs. Was using through a single 12 last night.
Awesome. I had just been reading some old threads on the thunder funk connection. As a lover of most things Gibson, this seems seriously cool.
An hour ago I didn't even know this existed, and now I'm seriously jonesing for one...
Definitely a cool amp and a unique piec of bass history. I even have the original Gibson carrying case for this! My buddy either bought it new or used but not for long.
They do popup for sale from time to time.
There was one for sale on Guitar Center's used site until a week or so ago. Only one I have seen for sale in a while but I haven't been looking really. If you do a search on TB you will probably find some older posts about them.

Just in case anyone else is considering this auction, I'd advise caution.
The 2nd pic in the listing is taken from somewhere else on the internet. I messaged the seller to see if he had a full picture of the back (just out of curiosity to see if it had a TF SN) and to ask about the Pic from the net. The response I got did not instill confidence. I won't go into detail here, as I could be mistaken, but if anyone is considering this auction and need details, PM me.
Those are uber cool. Unfortunately way out of anything resembling my price range. Not to mention my available storage space.
The fretboard grain on that one looks really nice. Also think the tuners are pretty interesting.
