Neither of them is really commonplace... the red one is a 1987 "Thunder Series" Bass V, basically, kind of a studio T-bird idea they tried and quickly abandoned. I've read there are maybe as few as 800 of these but I think there are probably a few more. Like the advertising said, "Back to Bassics"... mahogany body, set neck, wired V-V-T, and TB+ pickups. Q-80 is in this ad too, but different specs...

I didn't realize they were set neck. I had assumed they were bolt-on. Learn something new everyday!

Oddly, the Q-80 is a bolt-on... like a mahogany Victory bass with a maple Explorer neck, and (I think) Grabber-type pickups.

Agree! I love them. I plan to buy a red 2019 5 string once they go on close out. Been through a lot of basses and very surprised I landed on Gibson’s.
Same here, and still own much more expensive ... though not "better" ... basses which I use on occasion if they're ideal for a project, but having never played a Gibson before I'm very pleasantly surprised and I like them even more the longer I play, tweak, and wear them in.
2013 or 2014 for me though.
I'm on the same boat. After owning more than 50 basses I find interesting that I've finished stuck to my EB'14 Gibson's...
They are not the best sounding, they are not the most comfortable...still, they have something...
My 77 G3 all original except for the bridge saddles.... I've still got the original ones.... but they're rusted to billy-o
My 2014 EB. Probly my fave bass at present. SO light, resonant and punchy, not to mention versatile with its coil tap options.

Tho they were fine (DR coated) I've gotta set of Labella White Nylon Tape Wounds on now and they really hit the mark!
I recently traded my Black G3 for a 2014 Boullion Gold EB 5 string so i guess I am still in the fold. Digging the EB so much more in Hi C tuning! The bass has an amazing flamed neck and has a 120th Anniversary inlay at the 12th fret and I just turned 60 so Bam!

i've noticed a small change at the gibson website regarding the original series (new) gibson thunderbird... now the hardware (bridge & tuning keys) are chrome!!!! maybe it's a minor detail for most people, but i like it much more than the previous black hardware... i wish they change their pickup covers to chrome too in the future!!!
Picked this up last year. A 2014 EB 5 string. Super light, monster B string, great neck. Pleasure to play.
