GK 112-II NEO

Just picked up a GK Neo 112-II Neo for some small to medium gigs. Only got to spend a few minutes with it last night. Sounds good and seems to take EQ well. Looking forward to getting it on the gig tomorrow night.

Nice and light.

I have a pair of these and they are currently my most frequently used cabs. They have a bit of a dip in the upper mids, but not bad for a 112/horn config really, and like you said, they take EQ pretty nicely.

Well, it's a keeper. I picked it up for smaller gigs where I just need stage monitoring and it was great. I was able to add a little thump to it with some EQ. It filled the stage and cut nicely.

I can imagine that two of these would be a very formidable rig. I'm set with my NeoX212 for bigger stuff.

Very happy with the GK and would highly recommend checking them out.

I'm not sure what sounding "cheap" means. Tonal goals? Settings? Head? Style of music?

Interesting. I still have my UL112/UL110 ministack, but sold off my UL(2)410 because I dug the GK stuff more. The GK stuff just sounds more "alive" to my ears. Whole different thing than Bergs tho... at least in my case with the AE210's... which are a very different sound. I wouldn't equate the diff with good/bad, but very noticeable. Obviously different tone goals on those.

Anyway, all good, all that should matter to you is what you like best. :)

I recently bought one and hated the sound as well. This was surprising because these get a lot of love here. There was no warmth or fatness ro the low mids or mids. The high mids emphasized all the wrong things for me, sounded harsh. To get anything that resembled a sound i liked, i had to wildly exaggerate pre-amp and eq settings. Im coming from an $200 Acoustic b115 cab (that I generally liked quite a bit), so i didnt have expensive expectations. It did have solid lows though, and seemed like the speaker could really crank if needed.

I found that it had no lining inside and after reading a bunch about lining cabs, I decided to try it (I used a layer of high loft batting and a layer of egg carton mattress). The high mids improved a bit but that was it.

I liked the cab size and weight so I wanted to make this work for me. I read that the Eminence bass lite s2012 speaker sounds good and fat and seemed to have a good record of working well in cabs that werent specifically designed for it. I put one into the GK 112 cab and it sounds very good! It's pretty transparent (my basses sound like I expect they should) and it responds warmly to EQ. It also felt about two pounds lighter than the already lightweight GK speaker.

I've been looking for some light weight cabs but with lots of punch and low end...
these cabs keep popping up and getting rave reviews, and have seriously peaked my interest! Currently using Streamliner 900 and Mesa walkabout for heads, usually with Ampeg 410HLF or Schroeder Mini 12+L. Can anybody give me an idea of what to expect coming from these cabs?? Unfortunatly nobody in town has any GK in stock so its a little tricky to get a test drive. Anybody know of a good deal in Canada? Local store quoted $370.

not all things are for all people, so, it's not surprising that someone doesn't like these. They do have a voicing of their own.

as to the top end being harsh, yes, it can be. I run the horn on the 112 about 80-90% shut. where I keep treble on the amp, and tone on the bass depends which amp and which bass, but, usually they're turned down some from where I would have them on other cabs.

the basslite top end response doesn't run quite as high as the GK driver, so, that would calm the top end down some for you as well.

I should emphasize again, I love the build quality of the cab and while I didn't like the sound of the stock speaker, It did seem like a speaker that could handle plenty of power, maybe even a surprising amount for a single speaker. Its true the cab did not include any lining, but I found that horse has been beat plenty around here regarding GK. It wasn't a huge deal to line it myself.

The first issue for me is that the speaker just seemed to greatly color the sound, as a rule. My basses just did not sound like themselves. and even after A LOT of time with EQ, I just couldn't get them anywhere close to what I wanted. I like the way a bass naturally sounds (when played acoustically) to mostly come through the amp. It helps me create a mental identity for my basses and it makes tone shaping and EQ way more predictable. The basslite s2012 seems to have fixed most of my issues. I'm sure that just dropping the speaker into this cab means I won't get full potential out of it (see: it probably won't crank as much as the GK speaker) but I won't be demanding full volume potential.
