should be an early 1994 Pilot Pro 5, maple neck, poplar body.

Thanks for the info. I just snapped this picture with a flash, is this a flamed maple body? Also, I find it strange that the controls are wired volume/volume and not volume/blend, is that common on these?
ahh it is transparent blue, then it is flamed maple as all bodys with transparent finishes. and vol/vol/bs/tr has been standard wiring.

Mine was just like that but pearl white. I had to save up for the whole summer and got into a little trouble for spending all my money. Man, what memories. 16 , highschool, and I had the world by the balls(so I thought). Did your A string pop off the nut sometimes like mine did ?

Not yet, but I did have a Kramer with a similar headstock, and it actually snapped off the part of the nut which held the G string in place. Of course, that was a less expensive instrument...
I am so MAD with Guitar Center for the two Pilot basses I bought from them !! They are so WHACKED looking and un-PLAYABLE that I give up on Pilot basses !! I still love GUILD, due to my B-302S and my SB-202 !!! I def got ripped off on my Pilots from Guitar Center, though !! I'm so upset about it, I wanted pilot basses for a while now and now I'm pissed about them !!

Oh I gotta do a family pic. In the last year I have nailed down 2 Guild Pilot 5's. 1 lined fretless which was a custom order back in the 80's. The other is an Advanced Pilot 5. Both are very blingy with trans finishes. Nothing subtle at all. Finally I find a 5 that plays like an nice 4 when it comes to walking lines. Best 5 string necks I have ever felt. Love 'em both.
The fretless has an Audere Classic 4 band and Sadowsky pickups. Nice... The fretted has and OpB-2 and Lane Poors... For now... I ordered a set of pickups fro Pete Biltoft at Vintage Vibe. This set will look like stock J, exposed pole piece pickups but underneath each pole piece has a set screw that allows for adjustable height or pole piece replacement. Why would you replace your pole pieces ? To exchange Alnico 3 for 5 or ceramic or neo... I think another Audere will end up installed... Might try an OPb-3 again though...

I have a couple of mid-80's Pilots. Both with the EMG p-bass/j-bass pickup configuration. Can someone please clarify for me what are the functions of the control knobs for the pickups? I am assuming the front knob (the one farthest away from the bridge and closest to the neck) controls the volume for the p-bass pickup, the middle knob controls the volume for the bridge pickup. But what exactly does the rear knob (the one closest to the bridge) control? Is it supposed to be a master volume or a tone knob or something else?
Loose wire, bad pot - most likely an easy fix is you're at all handy with a soldering iron. Now you can have fun opening it up and poking around
I too put an Audere Classic in mine. Completely made the bass. (I traded some samples for it from a warehouse in Wisconsin run by the son of the then owner of Randall and Guild. Early 90's It was a castoff) Still have the neck pickup, but changed the bridge to a Ducan basslines. Sounds great and is versatile as hell.
Pretty interesting thread. Last night I swapped an SWR Triad cab for a Pilot bass, a 4-string in a eye-ball-swamping bright Cobalt-like blue, with EMGs, Grover tuners, and that 'bullet' sort of headstock. Not the one that looks like a foot (sorry- Lol!), or the pointy ones... I'll post a photo of it tonight.
The ser# is BE102826, can't find it in the Guild pdf chart.
The bass feels very light, plays well but the neck has an oddly 'cheep-ish' feel to it. Nothing really like my old Hamer, or even the Squire 'A' neck I've got on an old Mahogany P-Bass body. It's got s sort of unsubstantial feel to it. But it's a Guild, Made in USA, etc. Actually I like these basses- light, somehow easy and good fun to play. This one's in pretty good shape. I'm taking it to my next couple gigs to give 'er a run, and I think I'll put my old D'Addario Half-Rounds on it.

It's got s sort of unsubstantial feel to it. But it's a Guild, Made in USA, etc. Actually I like these basses- light, somehow easy and good fun to play. This one's in pretty good shape. We Guild-O-files refer to that headstock as the "cake knife"

And since it has that headstock it's probably an '87 - '89.
The body is lightweight poplar with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. I believe they called that color "Electric Blue".

Funny... I work as a sexton at a local church and Sunday mornings I set up for tafter-service coffee hour. That little domestic implement is part of my Sunday Morning Toolbox...

I never would have bought the bass with this color, but it's got its own, unlikely appeal... pretty darned unearthly.
