Looks like one of those stoned-out 'Hippie mods' from the late 60s - 70s
Like the wildly popular and equally horrific tear drop mod from the late 60's or early 70's.
And the second generation that manifested as either the saw some pointy edges into the body or make it a stick bass fad of the 80's....
Put down the crack pipe, put down the belt sander and back away from the saw and no basses will get hurt...
I like how everybody is reacting when you dont know the story. Theres nothing fishy going on, i didnt do that to my own bass. I coudlnt believe it either. Im not gonna get online and waste my time to make up some stupid story about why i decided to make my bass like that. I know nothing at all about sanding or anything else of the sort, i wouldnt try to change or alter the bass in any way, i know what im good at, and its playing, beyond that, i really know nothing. I love how some people are just negative on here for no reason at all. I was simply asking a question because it was something that I couldnt believe happened. I didnt fully ask what happened because i just knwo that would piss me off. Like I said, its a bass, its not my main one, I havent missed a beat obviously, since im not all that worried about it. It will be replaced. Theres no question about it. I know how this all will work out. I was simply asking if i should leave it as is, or paint the edges black(the sanded down part was black before, for the ONE guy who didnt seem to understand that. I appreciate you guys' thought but I dont want to make this negative. I was asking a simple question.

(I'm not really this slow. I just read this thread for the first time!)And to the O/P, don't take the replies personally. It's just that most people find it hard to believe that a "friend" would have so little regard for HIS friend to do that. He had no right. If he accidentally damaged the part of the body where your forearm rests, he should have immediately let you know. He could have said something like, "Hey man, I'm really sorry. But if you'll give me the okay, I think I might be able to try something that will make it look cool..."
Then, at least the further butchery after the initial damage would have been understandable. At least he would have asked permission to try to salvage it. But as it was, most of us just can't imagine how a "friend" would think it's okay to create such an abomination to somebody else's property...
1) IMO, This is clearly what happened to the bass, and then there was some cover-up job:

but at least he jacked up your bass guitar in revenge.
3) A friend is typically worth more than a mere bass guitar, especially if he lets you park your Ford in his attic once in awhile.
4) Like you said, you can just paint the edges black. Then simply get some cardboard (also black) and tape it onto the body to replace the missing parts. Back to normal, good as new. At least, better than this crap:

That is both sad and hilarious at the same time. I would just let him get you a new body and then give the "modified" body to him, since he did buy you a new one. That thing looks like a relic job by Helen Keller.

Seriously though, there is no reason to keep that body, it's the work of the devil. Just get a new body if the rest of the bass means anything to you. Or, borrow some of his gear and finish off your bass that way.
Eh, that bass was too heavy anyway; I bet it's under 10 lbs now!
I actually think it looks kind of cool! If I wanted to use that body, I would clear coat the edges. They'll just get grimy left unfinished.
I don't think finishing the edges black would look right, myself. Especially if you don't have finishing experience. You'll never replicate the original sunburst. If you use the body, maybe go for a solid color. As others have said, you could even add wood to get it back to it's original shape. This however, would be strictly a labour of love! I'm sure love is not what you feel when looking at this bass. Now that I think about it, getting a pro to replicate a sunburst on this shape could really freak people out! Something about that appeals to me. There are cheaper ways to stand out visually, though.
I bought a Peavey Patriot as a parts bass many years ago. The previous owner left it in a room with his 4 month old yellow labrador puppy. The pup chewed the lower horn into a splintery mess! I got a nice Super Ferrite pickup for $20 (the neck was junk too, unfortunately. I'd be gigging the thing as-is otherwise, chewed horn and all!).
Your attitude regarding your friend is pretty righteous (I mean that in a good way). He's lucky to have you as a friend, and you're lucky to have some perspective.
So yeah, my vote is leave it.

Seriously, that's why I don't let friends borrow anything of value from me. I wouldn't want to put us in the position of having to deal with a situation like this. I once let a friend borrow a guitar of mine and it came back with a nice scratch on the back and the case was beat to holy hell. He had nothing...and I mean nothing...to say about it when he returned it to me.

ok ... since most people still don't seem to be getting the point of your post. . . i say leave it as is. adding a black rim might be fine if there was still fading into black - but in some spots it would just look amateurish, and 'weak'. as he's still getting you another body, why not toy around with this one when it's replaced? maybe sand down the whole body ? (just for the lulz)

I'm bot going to tell you to smash him over the head or something like that. I appreciate that you aren't freaking out, you must be a true friend indeed. However, what gets me is that he just went ahead and did this "repair"/modification without even consulting you.
But really, I admire your attitude towards the whole thing. I've tend to think I am like this, and it would be nice if the rest of the world wold slow down and take things easy and not get so stressed.
