Hello From Jeff Berlin

I did have a question that I didn't want to raise during the last office hours session as I didn't want to derail such an interesting and informative chat about education. Is there any way that 'Pump It!' and 'Champion' could be re-released? I love them both dearly but lost my copy of 'Pump It!' moving house. I read an archived chat board post from 1997 that said that the masters for 'Pump It!' had been destroyed, that would be a terrible shame if true.

Similarly, I had been looking to track down a recording of 'Ave Maria' that you had played on Joe Diorio's '20th Century Impressions' album from the 80's. The only copy I can find is £125! Jeepers. I might just have to dream a while on that one.

It is my pleasure. I have not been affiliated with The Players School in some time. Still, if they retained my original philosophy of teaching music, I am completely confident that people can get a brilliant bass education there way beyond any of the top music schools because (again) if my original philosophy of teaching still exists, you will only learn via musical content offered at your level to practice it.

If I may ask, out of your extensive recording career, what would you consider to be your magnum opus? Your personal favorite?

Thank you

Makes perfect sense. I appreciate the reply. Can I just say that I am so very envious of your having played with Dennis Chambers? Here at Talk Bass we often ask the question who would you like to play with. Dennis is my number one Drummer. How did you find him to work with both as a person and as a musician? His chops are as legendary as yours.

Take care.
Dennis and I are like brothers. Playing with him made me a better bass player. He is superior to me in the area of rhythmical subdivision. Each night that we played, my eyes and ears were locked on him as I struggled to make heads and tails of his astonishing variety of rhythmic playing.

I intend to re-release several of my older CD's and also to record a classical CD. Ave Maria figures to be one of the works that I wish to play. Thanks for asking me about this.

Can I be completely honest? My upcoming release in February-March of my new arrangement of Joe Frazier (to be known as Joe Frazier Rd. 3) features without a doubt, my best bass playing and bass tone to date. Steve Vai contrituted a solo as well which should excite his fans.

he did a clinic here around 92-93, changed the way i perceived music since :)

Learning well is an interest I have. I recall you saying in magazine articles that studying music from excellent musicians that don't play bass was a strong way to improve. I've been doing this over 25 years.

I am glad to hear this. Learning well doesn't replace anything that you do as a bass player that you love to do. The idea is that while you work on things that are academic and guaranteed to give you the best chance at musical improvement, you can and should continue to do everything that you have always done on your bass that makes you happy. Learning well isn't a replacement in your musical life. It is an addition. :)

I always liked this little ditty. Doesn't get many requests for the dance floor though.

You won't remember me but I did a lot of your drop in workshops at MI in maybe '85/86'? It was the year both Frank Gamble and Paul Gilbert started teaching. Also saw you jam with Jaco on stage that year. It was the time Jaco borrowed the fretless bass with the Kellogs Cornflake pick guard from a student audience member. :D

I wasn't yet a member yet when you were here before but very glad that you've reappeared. Those Bruford albums you did had a monumental influence on me.

I can relate.
I never saw a Dennis Chambers' clinic...next best thing, though-
A friend of his (also from Baltimore), Larry Bright, did a clinic here in the '90s. Subdivisions, displacement, odd against even, etc.
Yeah, he turned on some lights for me.

In the '80s, Mr. Berlin did a clinic at the same store (Norfolk, VA). The playing? Outstanding. Jeff's stories? Equally great!
Afterwards, I just shook my head. It doesn't get any better than that.

Yes which is why thats the first thing i asked jeff lol, what i remember most about Dennis' clinic is his attitude, calm and confident and he attacked the drums in way i have not seen since :)

I found this website illuminating. Home

I've asked a site administrator if I could mention Jeff's new reading course and I got the go-ahead to bring it up. I didn't want to mention it in the event that I'd be breaching the rules but I've had the necessary permission.

Now, I am not affiliated with Jeff in any fashion nor do I stand to gain commercially in any sense from this chat. My relationship with Jeff is as a student and a customer because I have begun his new online reading course.

There are a couple of podcasts on the Jeff Berlin Music Group website that really drill down into what each package is about but it's essentially a five part course (with more modules planned) that starts at the very basics of reading and moves onto some advanced concepts. The beauty of it is, it's all musically based content that is structured to allow the player to grow and learn. There are also demonstration videos included to help you along the way.

I couldn't read a note before I started this course so I went in at the first package. I have found it hugely empowering and enlightening as what was a mystery to me (reading music) is now being unlocked piece by piece. I supplement my self taught transcription and rehearsal with this reading course and I'm impressed with my own progress. I have a young daughter at the moment and a full time job so I can't go to music school but I can study in my own time, at my own pace, and make big leaps with Jeff's reading course. My dream is to get my reading to a level where I can complete all five packages.
