History Channel - Vikings

At first, I thought the 10 year time jump in season four was cool. Now, I think it sucks.
They could have done a few more seasons of Ragnar and his sons growing up.
I'll watch all of this season, but maybe not after. This has me upset.

I kind of have blind trust in Hirst and hope either Ragnar becomes the legend and appears on occasion, or something else that can maintain my interest. Bjorn is a badass, but the collection of characters that aren't Ragnar won't be enough to keep the series afloat.

Maybe this is destined to be the last season? I'm unsure if anything M Hirst has done previously lasted this long.

If you can - try to watch the new mini-series right after Vikings called "Real Vikings". They show the actual history of the events, and how they incorporated it into the Vikings series. The 1st episode in the series had a great deal to do with Rollo "one of the greatest Vikings", and Clive Standen was a guest for that section of the show.

I am watching the 3rd and 4th episodes now. I fell behind, busy with school. So far..it is a little draggy.

I’ve read that they design a special saddle for him so he can ride, and once that happens he becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Wow...she’s gone!! Finally! What will her sons do when they find out? And Ragnar seems to be in big trouble. I keep thinking he must have something up his sleeve, he always has but are we still seeing the same Ragnar?

Interesting turn of events! Not quite done with this episode yet. I’m with you Mike, it is very sad to see the demise of Ragnar

Do you think he was saying he knows he is going to die in England (perhaps part of his plan he alluded to in next weeks episode), so he made this trip knowing full well he will never go back to Kattegat?

I am inclined to think he meant that he knows the reason for this trip is that he is going to die in England.

Curious too how when he was carrying Ivar and talking about the gods. It seems to me Ragnar does not have the faith/confidence/loyalty/trust in the gods as his fellow Vikings do.

I think you are right Mike. We do know legend has it that Ragnar dies in a pit of vipers. Then his sons spend their days avenging him.

Lagertha didn’t need to kill them all and I agree, if she had, people would have been pissed at her. Many who have known her in Kattegat know her to be fair and kind. I think to some extent they are glad to have her back, because Aslaug had turned into a drunk and she never was a good ruler. So Lagertha did the right thing. Now...what will the songs do?

Yes, for sure. As she said, she felt it was not their fault but that Aslaug bewitched Ragnar. Lagertha doesn’t blame the sons.

Why did the English send Magnus off though? How weird! So do we really believe that Magnus is not Ragnar’s but that Quinthrith made that up to some how save herself? She did have many partners after all, who knows whose child he is! But still...sending him out into the wild??

I wonder about sending Magnus off too, but I suspect it's just because he doesn't want the boy talking to Ragnar.

Shooting Aslaug in the back was pretty unfair!
I suppose maybe Lagertha changed her mind mid-flight, LOL

Aslaug's sons will surely try and get revenge. If it had been me on the throne, I've have had Ubbe executed after he basically said allowing them to live was a bad idea.

Magnus got the boot from Ecbert as soon as Ragnar confirmed he never had sex with Kwenthrith. Perhaps Ecbert held out hope Magnus would be some bargaining chip should Ragnar and the Vikings return.
Sigurd didn't seem all that upset that Aslaug was killed, but Ubbe sure was. Ubbe can use that anger to destroy the Saxons.

How cool would it be to have everyone thinking Ragnar is dead, so his sons show up at Aelle's place to find Ragnar captured and alive. His sons free him and Ragnar kills Aelle, then rides with his sons back to Wessex and takes care of Ecbert and Aethulwulf.

Ragnar has a history of using people for his benefit and discarding them. I almost think that's part of the Viking way. Ragnar has true love for himself only. He has proven that along the way, leaving Lagertha, etc., letting Bjorn leave with her...

I think, in Ragnar's mind, three small ships full of men could overcome Eckbert's forces, at least enough for him to get close enough to kill the king. I doubt he cares about Magnus too much. He hasn't really had much to do with the middle 3 at all since his return either.

Not true about Ragnar not caring about people. Have you been watching all the seasons? He cares very much about his sons, and indeed he cares deeply for Lagertha. He has said over and over that the cost of being a king was so heavy and that in the end power destroys. He is now living that, and has regrets, why else would he want to die. He sacrificed a lot to be king, and he told Bjorn 3 seasons ago..that power corrupts, that it will take everything from you. He said that as a warning to Bjorn. To say Ragnar only cares for himself? You’ve not been paying attention to his character of you really think that, or maybe you’ve just come in in the last season? Watch all the seasons from season 1. You won’t be able to say that.

Having the English kill him will set off the revenge Ragnar was unable to get himself, and ten fold. I'm thinking Rollo may be in on it too.

Yes, I've seen every episode at least 3 times. Yes, Ragnar loves his sons, especially Bjorn and Ivar. I never said he would sacrifice them to save himself but for as far as the men he took to England, he couldn't had cared less. These are the same guys that spit in his face before he paid them to go along and continued to give him S*** after arriving (shipwrecking) in England.

I'll freely admit that I said he only loves himself. I was wrong about that. To say that he loves the middle three sons as much as he loves himself, I still say the answer is no. He left them for a dozen of their most formative years. I know it was a different time and families were split all the time, but leaving for that long was pure selfishness on Ragnar's part. Disgraced or not.
