Just placed an order for an Ignition/Icon w/case. Also ordered a set of La Bellas.
When I started out and really wanted a Höfner, only German made models were available, and they were expensive. Very cool to have these budget models now at this price point.

Back in about '72, I wandered into a hock shop in Reno, and there on the wall was a gorgeous sunburst Hofner Club Bass for $75.00 and me with $10.00 in my pocket and 4 hours away from home. I well knew what it was because I already had 2 500/1's. PAIN! Course the dollar was a little different then. My new 500/1 was $435.00 in '67.

I too bend my finger under the strings of my Hofner when i play with my thumb (i do not use any picks).
This is because the strings are very high on the bass top.
I played a Ignition Beatle yesterday, and it seemed that the strings were much higher off the body than my Hofner Club, almost uncomfortably so.
The bridge is adjustable for height and the neck has an adjustable trussrod. Between those two adjustments I'm sure the action can be imporved.
Picked it up in 72/73 retired it in 75 when I bought my Rick 4001

agreed. but the heel of the neck can only be where it is. The action on this bass was not all that bad, but the angle of the strings off of the heel was such that it couldn't be any lower, without reset of the neck. We're not talking huge here, just that it was higher than my Club.
Did you try adjusting the trussrod and was the bridge adjusted all the way down to the bridge foot?
Enjoying the Club Bass and its uniqueness.My camera is on loan,pics will be coming in a few days.I need to put some flats on it ASAP.I use TI flats on other basses(long scale) and really like them.Many seem to rave about the Labella BeatleBass flats.(no tapewounds,thanks)Can any one compare these as to tone and playability on a Hofner.I know the TI's are a fairly low tension,Labellas?I know how that lower tension works on my 34" basses,again there are some unique dynamics to the Hofner that go beyond it just being a short scale.Looking to put some playing time in on it the next few days.
Congrats on the score! I use TIs on my 68 club and they really suit the bass. The low tension of the strings and short scale bass allows you to raise the action and really get some nice thump. The trussrod was fine. The neck was straight with slight relief. If you lowered the bridge, the strings would have been on frets at the heel of the neck. The set up was fine, the neck angle would not allow the bridge to be lowered. Plus, I'm not going to do anything to a display guitar at Guitar Center.

I'm not really about shortscale, but if I can find some affordable flats that will actually fit, I might actually play it sometime.
Does anyone know for certain if these have the German pickups? They're supposed to be "Höfner staple nickle," which is the same description as the German basses have for theirs.

Sounds like a it may be bit of a ski slope. I always check relief between the first and last frets for just that reason.
I've had them adjust things for me a few times.
