Not basses, but Gibson has really cornered the market in fugly over the last few years.

Worst part about it is that all of those probably cost more new than the already overpriced standards. That triple bucker, fish-tail Paul at the bottom left is the only one of the lot I could see myself playing, and that's coming from the guy that is very defensive of his Dano Longhorn.

Wow, I actually think these are beautiful, the SG was introduced in 1961 and these have a psychedelic vibe that reminds me of the san francisco scene, greateful dead, jefferson airplane, quicksilver...

Well that green at the top I refer to as toothpaste green.

I call that "Outhouse Green"

It's also hard to go wrong with a maple fretboard...

Oddly, that was when I learned to tell quality stuff from the rest.

And, IMHO and IMPE, maple fretboards look plain and unfinished, and visually contrast in unlikable ways with most colors. Don't like the feel, either.

Yes, because it stood out in stark contrast to everything else...

The 70s were a lot of things but a decade of manufacturing quality was not one of them! It was so bad that the public made an A list star out of a consumer advocate.

The first one would look better with it was finish in matte satin or tung oil. The second one looks good to me. The problem with rosewood is it looks like rust on pretty much 90% of the color combination unlike maple and ebony.

This though is HERESY! Maple costs more, therefore it is better. I thought everyone knew this.

I think it is the unfinished look that attracts me and for me it looks great with primary colors but damn things would be boring if we all had the same tastes.

My absolute favorite is a thick slab of unlined fretless ebony. That could make a piece of driftwood look great.

Rosewood just looks cheap and funky with the wrong body color, a lot of colors clash with the red and designers apparently don't use a color wheel to look for better complements.

The thing is that those are essentially plywood, only several times that of what a plywood guitar should cost.

yep ... too many black, white or blue basses with rosewood fingerboard... my god it clash so much unlike maple that would fit perfectly with blue or ebony for an all black bass or to make a white bass look classy.

if you have a pickguard you may have a chance to make rosewood work with the dreaded tort guard

I guess it's me but I like that Forest color (not that particular bass though) as well as that Jade Pearl Metallic and as stated before I'm a fan of the Antigua.

The Metallic Forest on it's own is fine, it being combined with the red tort is what makes it so ugly imo. Red and green are opposites on the color wheel, and imo the most obnoxious pair of opposites there is. Changing the green to a much lighter shade can help to let the colors compliment each other, but bold green and bold red is just terrible. IMO.

Since we're kind of on the subject, can anyone tell me what the official darker red color name(s) were for the 2011 MIM standard P-bass? (somewhere in the light to medium Burgundy range.)

As a owner of many Warwick's over the years and the current owner of a Warwick, I can say they've done great job of creating some of the ugliest finishes I've ever seen in recent years. All this rust crap is just horrid looking. Hans Pee Pee Wilfer has pretty bad taste a lot of the time. He should stick to what made his basses what they are.

I've heard of pre-war Martin acoustics before, but never a pre-war bass. Was this found in a closet at Chernobyl?
