Short answer............too many!

I have a collection of 24 bass guitars. At age 71 and a non professional bassist, GAS and ownership has taken the place of actually playing. Many of this collection are a matter of different colors and variations of fretboards and hardware, etc. Ridiculous!

My 2023 resolution is to sell, sell, sell. Maybe keep 7 to 10 basses. I shouldn't even keep that many but these would be very special ones.

It easy to buy stuff and then it becomes clutter. Easy to buy, challenging to sell. Breaking even on a sell rarely happens. Almost always a loss of money.

Don't let GAS get the better of you!

I have 12, and every time I look at my collection I feel a sense of accomplishment, pride, disgust, and anxiety all at the same time. I'm generally one of those people that distrusts any sort of situation where things are going great in life. I'm always weary of some turn of events that is bound to happen and I'll end up penniless, homeless in the street. But I digress...

I've finally got all of the pieces of gear in my collection that I've always wanted, and for the most part, will cover about every tone I could ever want. It's going to be difficult to sell anything in the future, if I'm forced to. Every time I pick up one of the basses to play, they inspire me in different ways.

I have four basses:

a ‘79 Ric 4001 (with mods) that I bought new

a G&L L-2500

a MusicMan StingRay

a Yamaha TRBX605FM

I made it for a lot of years with only the Ric, but having active and 5 strings gives me all the flexibility I need.

I started playing bass uke about 9 years ago with a ukulele group. I love having GAS and accumulated 54 bass ukes/mini bass guitars, settling on 31 until a few months ago when I found that many of them where getting difficult to play with nerve damage in my neck from radiation treatments for cancer long ago.

Also, I wanted to use the same strings across the board, Galli flatwound on nylon core, so I eliminated all but 6 bass ukes, but not letting go of GAS, little by little I'm going up to 10, with more possible. They're all 21" scale acoustic, one is a custom gypsy jazz solid walnut, the rest are Hadean Hofner violin style that I have modified.

7 basses and I've only been playing 5 years! Yeah... overkill. I love 'em all, however. Except a Sterling Stingray 34PB that I still need to bond with. Not to mention an awesome bass rig to boot! What the heck is wrong with me?!!!
