How many pedals do you use on a job?

Got everything I could possibly need in any situation on this board. On a standard gig that doesn't call for any effects, I'll have compressor on the HX Stomp (always on).
Then...depending on the..job.., I have different patches setup to cover everything from wedding gigs, top 40s, to original music with different groups and whatnot.

The only pedal I use occasionally is a graphic eq for my upright to notch out feedback. For my horizontal bass, I use a Zoom rack mount RFX-1000, for an occasional chorus and sometimes I use the cabinet emulator settings if I’m in a weird sounding room or at an outside gig. My new Trace Elliot ELF has some great built in parametric-like eq abilities that actually allowed me to play a standup gig without needing the graphic we pedal this past weekend! The less I have to plug in, the better.

i don't bother with a pedal/board most of the time, and when i have taken a small board i use a pedal(s) on one or two tunes. if my setlists were different (two regular bands) might need more pedal expression. most of the stuff i play doesn't need anything but practice.

I play gigs with just my bass and amp. I have a HX Stomp that is my swiss army knife to most shows. I have a small pedalboard with 6 pedals that I use at other gigs. I used 3 pedals puls my HX Stomp at my latest gig.

Now, I'm building a new pedalboard with 13 pedals for my fun project to play through the cold season.

So, my answer is: I use as many as I need.

Depends on the job, the ensemble, and the arrangement. Usual suspects include a Dark Glass Alpha-Omega, a Boss OC-3, CE-2, RC-3, a MXR compressor, and a TC HoF2.

I am the same. I don't use any effects at all. I have only active basses and depending on which bass head I use, I connect to a passive Radial Pro DI2 box to the FOH team or the DI on my rig. In the past I tried a compressor but didn't like what it took from my tone even when off. I don't have any issues with anyone using effects, no-one I've played for has ever asked for them and if the occasion arose where one was needed I would look into it but until that happens I'm staying just plug and play.

Technically, I have three 'always-on' pedals; however, only one is a true 'effect' pedal. The first is a Radial Bigshot I/O for switching between two basses. That goes into an Eden Glowplug (the 'effect' in the chain) for a bit of low mid girth. That then goes into an Eden WTDI pedal, which has some light compression and EQ if necessary.
I also have an effects loop for the amp, consisting of octave, overdrive and chorus, but I use those sparingly.

Current chain for me goes:

Polytune > Source Audio C4 > DG Alpha Omicron > Emerson Duke Silver (comp/EQ) > Empress Echosystem > Boughton HPF DI. Theres also a Disaster Area DMC 3XL on there to control the C4 and Echosystem.

Only 3 "effects" but it covers so much sonic real estate.

I’ll bring a tuner, a compressor, a DI, and some sort of mild OD. Usually Southampton’s Fifth Gear. Most times everything but the tuner stays in the gig bag unless I feel some signal correction is needed due to something about the room’s acoustics. So I don’t even have them on a board.

Recently I picked up a Dry Bell Unit 67 which may well end up replacing everything but the tuner and DI for gig use.

I do not gig as of yet (want to change that soon and find like minded musicians in my area!), but i have came to usually use chorus, flanger, delay, fuzz. Lately, i have tried to stack chorus pedals and like it thus far!

I can see that you use pretty low setting of the Warmth and Crossover knobs on the Glowplug....

Yeah, it's not really a distortion sound that I'm going for with it.
It's more like that tube smoothness to the sound I want.
At the settings I have, it's incredibly subtle, but it does add a little low-mid hump - but over such a broad Q that it has a wonderfully organic, baked in quality. More like the character of an amp than anything.
It's one of those things that you only notice when the pedal is turned off - the E and A strings suddenly sound a little thinner.

That said, I have heard that one of the best things you can do is upgrade the tube, so I might try that soon and see if that improves the sound of the tube cranked.

My pedal count continues to dwindle. Today it's:

1) Tuner -- an old Korg DT10 that refuses to die
2) Future Impact -- for envelope filter / synth / octave on a total of 2 or 3 tunes
3) SansAmp BDDI -- currently used mostly as a DI out to FOH, set close to flat -- the bulk of the tone control I do on my bass, with its active preamp​

I used to use a compressor, but gave up on it after a while.
I love watching pedal demos, and I like a lot of what I hear
but for most of what we play (funk, blues, jazz) I'm not using
effects.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I usually use the Glowplug in a similar way-just as a tone sweetener.

Nice, David! But I'm also totally down with the purist thing as well. I'm for whatever someone feels they need to get through their gig, whether it's nothing or 100 pedals in a fridge rack with midi switchers and 5 different signals to the board. I did no pedals for a while my own self, actually did a gig today where the stage was tiny and skipped the pedals, and most of the time my pedals are off as well. Well, maybe half the time. On some gigs That Mel 9 sounds like a whole lot of fun, and the Epitome has three really good pedals in one. Just whatever you do, don't go down the fuzz vortex. It's a rabbit hole from which there is no escape!!!

The epitome was first, trying a little reverb on stuff like, only livin' boy, and America which are tough to get through sometimes these days.... I use the flange on have a cigar, I use the octave up for an eight string vibe..just a little seasoning. The mel-9 is really fun on anything from moon river to nights in white satin... she's leaving home... Having a string section or a single cello following the bass works great on locomotive breath as well. The comp is just to help the mel-9 respond more evenly to input. Play soft, it drops off, hit it hard, it's too much. I'm looking at the sea of pedals taylored for the bass and wondering what can I mess with next!
