if my pedal board were to evaporate tomorrow it'd just be replaced by an HX-XL, eq2 and opus and someother midi controller.

I got a good chuckle out of this thread, thinking of all the complaints about spending $1k on an amp is outrageous!
Yeah, but it's easier to buy 5 pedals x $200 than a $1000 amp. :smug:
You should sell a modular amp: we could buy separatly a preamp module (solid state or tube), an EQ modules, and power section module :roflmao:

(…btw, are all of the "I have a cable" and "we don't need a board" comments breaking the "no fx" trolling rule? 👀)
IMNSHO, not if the OP explicitly opens up that discussion, which I think clearly happened in this case. Report posts you think are outside the spirit of this thread if you feel the need to though, of course. ;)

I've been building a board over the last year or so - I'm getting close to stabilizing so this should be slowing down for the foreseeable future. Like a lot of people I've picked up the majority of this used, but as it stands to replace with new:

  • Pedaltrain Metro 20 ------------ $100
  • Cioks DC7 ---------------------- $259
  • Cioks 4 expander --------------- $149
  • SushiBox MORE ------------------ $235
  • Empress Bass Comp -------------- $274
  • Strobostomp Mini --------------- $119
  • MXR Poly Blue Ocatve ----------- $220
  • Spaceman Saturn VI ------------- $219
  • Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop - $259
  • Nobels ODR mini ---------------- $80
  • Way Huge Pork & Pickle --------- $190
  • Empress ParaEQ mkII Deluxe ----- $349
  • SushiBox Finally V2 ------------ $250
  • patch cables, etc -------------- $100
  • TOTAL -------------------------- $2803

Of course, don't tell my wife...

To be creative and not run of the mill. I’ve been using pedals on bass since the mid-70’s, inspired by what I heard on recordings.
See, that's great, and it works for you, and I'm all for doing whatever helps you make your best music.

I suppose I'll just have to be run of the mill, although actually I prefer 'minimalist'.

FWIW, the only pedal on my board I think is necessary is the Broughton hpf+lpf. It allows me to tune my signal to the room and prevent the room from vibrating so much that I can't hear myself. The clean gain lets me saturate any amp with any bass.

Aren't there problems you wish you could solve?

Let's say the one you gig with the most?
Right now I’m revamping my big board, but there’s some unusual routing and patch points for ‘satellites’ if/when needed(more of an experimental thing).
My “B” board(basics, grab’n’go)is this…

As many of those are budget, let alone used, not as much invested, but to replace? Yeah, it would add up. I would have a Radial Bassbone there instead of the graphic and DI box, but on the big board, I had a Lehle Basswitch preamp which is having some problems now, so it’s waiting for repair when I can afford it, and the Radial got shifted over to that. Roughly the same kinds of effects, but bigger models(like a Markbass Compressore, EHX Pitchfork, IE Polytope, etc…$$$). On that board, I also have it set up where the octave up is sent to separate dirt and modulation, and on to a separate amp for a faux guitar sound whenever I’m in a trio situation. The in-line effects loop patch point is for occasional off the wall stuff like the EHX Ravish Sitar and Super Ego, Ring Mods and other weird things, whenever, all on smaller boards.

Then there’s my guitar boards, but I ain’t gonna go there. But if I actually added everything up, even at used prices, I’d probably have a heart attack.

I think you mentioned in another post that you run into an amp? I probably should have asked in my original question about bass players needing less pedals if they gig with amps. I actually don't even own an amp. Only play quiet stages with IEM. If you were not able to use your amp, just IEM and FOH, do you think you would invest in some type of pedalboard to get a sound you wanted? Or would you still just use a tuner and play without anything?

IF I were still out there and was in an IEM quiet stage ('quiet stage' . . . . what has this world come to?) environment, I found out using the Mackie board as a practice tool that straight into that can sound mighty sterile, but I put up with it for headphones around the house. Playing in earnest, I can't think of a pedal that would suit so I'd likely use a channel strip: I prefer studio / FOH grade gear for outboard instead of pedals (much less a lot of pedals) so most likely I'd go for something like. . . .

None that a pedal would fix. Every bass amp has a filter built in to floor the deep end, and playing fives with the occasional Low C's and D's, dropping them in the wrong places unsettles most tunes worse than room vagaries, which we will always fight, seldom beat, and live with every time we go into a room.

Every time I fight Standing Waves, Standing Waves always wins.

There's a company called Synergy, and they sell amps that take preamp modules from a bunch of different makers. You can even have one preamp/eq for a "clean channel" and another for a "dirty channel." It's pretty awesome, actually. I don't think they have power section modules. All of this is pretty much for guitarists, tho, and it's still very expensive!

Yes, that makes sense.

Some of my gear has appreciated a ton since I bought it. My Noble that I got from a TBer for $950 back in 2019 is now worth about $2000 if I needed to replace one tomorrow - yikes! Too rich for my blood, I'm happy to have not paid a premium. The old big-box Octabvre MkII is going the same direction, I guess since some youtubers did shootouts with the newer version and preferred the MKII. Reverb has confirmed sales as high as $600-$800 in the past year and (stupid) current unsold listings of ones for $2999 and $3299 - absolutely ridiculous.

Most else is immediately available either direct from the manufacturer or for reasonable used prices.
