I might be kicked off TB for this, but.....

the only bassist that really make me pitch a tent is Sam Rivers and Ryan Martinie. i just don't get whats so great about all these TB legendary bassists. i have listened to them and i understand what they mean to a lot of people.

but its just.......lame. all of them. lame, so incredibly 'wearing socks and sandals at the same time lame.

i'm all for personal taste but find the tag "f-Jaco" to be a bit troll like. I get it. You want us all to read your post and comment.

The teaser headline doesn't hurt the act of blatant "click baiting" either.

I'm guessing whatever issue you have with Jaco may be as much a result of his legion of clones. I've dropped fretless finger funk figures and poorly intonated slides and double-stops plenty of places they don't belong.

Doing so helped me to learn and weed out the musicians who don't have enough patience/humor to work with me.

I guess we should all be thankful we aren't Jaco and don't have to deal with all of the problems that come with creative genius and serious mental health problems.

Hero worship IS over rated if it stifles creativity.

Personally, I'm grateful to have many heroes and anti-heroes who help guide my growth and learn from their mistakes.

What inspires you OP? what is the creative core of your being?

So many musicians seem to be robots drivin by insecurity to perform and ALL of their issues come out in song.

It's too easy to throw something on a board with IMHO or "I'm just saying" as your caveot.

For anyone doubting his groove, check this out

I don't like that back pickup tone, but there's no denying his genius and innovations for all modern bassists, his importance cannot be overstated!

At first, Jaco's sound did put me off. After a while I realized that it was all part of what he was doing. How much of that bass work do you think was written out before-hand? Do you think he winged it entirely after looking over the sheet? I believe he probably could have done it.

I've been told that he very definitely composed and wrote out the Havona solo but i can't find the source. In any case, brilliant stuff.

Funny the way that works. It often seems to come with the territory. Mingus, Bud Powell, Monk, Hendrix, Jaco.... the list goes on. They are savants of a certain kind - one part of their brain is humongously overdeveloped at the expense of other parts.

Well said!

My ha'pennth worth: I bought the eponymous LP when it first came out and apart from a few tracks I found it hard to digest, as a kid. That said, I spent a lot of time listening to his style and phrasing and some of that sits in my playing today; he was undoubtedly an influence.

In the age of the internet, I found more of his playing and marvelled at it And whilst a lot of it can be rambling improv, there can be no understating that man's ability on the 4-string bass. He was a true innovator, whether you like it or not.

It's so organized and precise I have to believe it was originally written out. But I don't think he had to read the whole thing off the sheet when he recorded it - he had most of it in his head. It may actually have been written out more for the benefit of the others. Have to look for some live clips of that thing - I'm sure he played it a little different every time.

Maybe I am misunderstanding this post; but, it seems to me that the truly ignorant and purposely disrespectful posts are the most unfortunate.

i called the bassist that people here rave about lame

lame is not an insult you rinser.

Define: Lame
  • (of something intended to be entertaining) uninspiring and dull.
"I found the programme pretty lame and not very informative"
that's my personal opinion of his playing. go be pissy elsewhere.
Excuse me? First, you directly imply that I am stupid and now you are calling me names. Please review the posting rules.
