Ignorant bass comment thread

"I'm just a bass player" Is my favorite.

The whole pick vs fingers argument is ridiculous. I play finger style and that isn't because I think people who play with picks are pussies or suck. It's because I suck at playing with a pick. I used to play with a pick and I didn't like the sound I made with one( I have very crappy technique I guess). Add constantly getting over-excited and breaking E strings and there you go no more pick for me. Finally; no your fingers and nails don't sound like a pick, I completely agree. If someone were so anti - pick then why would they want their fingers to sound like one?

I'm thinking about having a table lamp mounted on my Alembic. Whaddya think? ;^)

Two words, S n o w - G l o b e

Think about it for a while.......:D

Actually, by now "where's the snow globe" "Nice bass except it's backwards" and "Nice, but there is too many strings" are all coming dangerously close to being ignorant comments by now.....and I am guilty of using them all here...followed by this guy
:hiding:

My charming bride asked me once, as I put the P bass into it's stand for the first time -
"Why do you have 3 of them now?"
I answered, "Because I can't buy number 4 till I have number 3!" You tell me which statement there was the ignorant one....

My favorite ignorant bass comment has to do with 80's co.... um coc....(male chicken) rock....

"......you want 80's metal bass? Get anything really pointy and stripe the crap out of it....or paint it a really bright white, put a big red rising sun on it and be sure to tie a bright bandanna or two around the headstock. Oh, and don't forget to put a 12 inch summer sausage in your spandex pants to fool the chicks.....learning to actually play the bass is optional for 80's rock. Just bang out a bunch of 8th notes and pout a lot.....

Come to think of it...aw nuts! I said that one too.....
Damn.....:eek::help::eek:

"so you play a six string huh? that means you think you mastered a four string doesn't it? You're a Jack@ss"

I hate when people hate on me for my six string... it's always guitarists too, i think its just fear.

It's kinda interesting/funny/sad how six (or more) stringed bassists are the scurge of all musicians. Guitarists hate us and most bassists disown us!

Less is more...

Ok, I agree...when its called for. If more than one note per measure is called, I'm taking it man.

Ok, don't mean to cause backlash here, but I feel this is a big misconception for bassplayers. Less needs to be used when less needs to be used. Also, more needs to be more when called. I had to learn not to overplay, but doing that taught me the importance of knowing what is right for a song.

IHMO, IME,
:smug:

My dad recently bought me a 6-string (I'm 16). I go to YouTube and show him a video of Vic Wooten or Stu Hamm or anyone who is a monster on bass, and every time you can count on "He only needs 4, why do you need 6?" :scowl:

"You can't play songs on bass. Bass is there to fill in guitar."

"Electric Bass players are a dime a dozen, they can't play the real bass."

"You're pretty good! So when do you want to upgrade to guitar?"

Drummer from my former band prior to buying my 6 - "Dude, you can't buy any more than 5, you'll be playing guitar then."

"Why don't you play through a regular guitar amp?"

"Dude, I wouldn't buy from (insert high-end amp manufacturer here), just stick with a Crate. They're reliable because they've been around for years."

"So, can you play Seinfeld? How about Play that Funky Music?"

"Everybody knows that if you play a Squier, you suck." (Note, I haven't actually run across this because I don't own a Squier, but I used to buy into this one myself. Tell that to Regi Wooten, Victor Wooten's big brother, by the way.)

I like the one that frequently comes up when someone finds out I play bass---"oh, bass is easier than guitar, isn't it?" Uh-Huh. I'd like to see a guitarist play their stuff on a bass (I'll even allow them a six-string) and I'd like to see them try to play the stuff that I play (I haven't come across a one that can bend a note up a half-step, let alone a whole-step---all within one beat of the measure). And they have just a little trouble stretching across 5 or so frets or playing an inverted triad. Yeah---but it's easy!:hmm:

my favorite is.."well jaco only needed 4"

lmao. I can't believe that one wasn't meantioned before.

Also, to the post about playing Seinfeld and Play the Funky Music... I actually learned those songs to shut people up... :scowl:

My favorite though is people who bash bass playing to me and then ask me to be in their band a few weeks later because they can't find a decent bassist... my god people. :p

My favorite one is "active basses all sound hi-fi/sterile/like crap/metal/slick etc." or "you can only play blues on a Fender j- or p-bass".

I started playing on an active bass, and have continued doing so for almost 12 years now. It's hard to change now.
