Is global warming fake?

I'm actually on the fence about the percentage impact that human based activity has on what is clearly a warming trend.

However, consensus is a HUGE part of the scientific method. Another name for it is 'peer review'. It keeps the 'out in left field' ideas from becoming accepted scientific theories (and the term 'theory' is also greatly misunderstood).

Consensus is a key point of the scientific method. Another key point is the rejection and modification of a theory as new data emerge. I believe the global warming literature is undergoing that sort of scrutiny and modification at the moment. Previously, many fought against the idea that the earth was going through a warming trend. However, that's pretty much a given at this point, from my understanding of the literature. However, the 'cause' of this warming (is it 'human independent', 10% human caused, or primarily human caused through cars, cattle, deforestation, etc., etc., etc.) is still very much in the early stages of investigation.

IMO:)

What you said!
From what I understand there is consensus on global warming (effect) but not what triggers it (cause). There´s no real consensus on the effect of global worming either, pretty hard to predict.

I haven´t read much on it, but it would surprise me if much consensus actually exist on the cause. But I know alot of brilliant scientists who deeply believe the world is in trouble because of us. Writing them of as conspiracie leftie loonies is pretty foolish.

whoah, whoah, whoah. this thread isn't about toddler fighting!

Skeptical Scientists Urge World To ‘Have the Courage to Do Nothing' At UN Conference

BALI, Indonesia - An international team of scientists skeptical of man-made climate fears promoted by the UN and former Vice President Al Gore, descended on Bali this week to urge the world to "have the courage to do nothing" in response to UN demands.

Lord Christopher Monckton, a UK climate researcher, had a blunt message for UN climate conference participants on Monday.

"Climate change is a non problem. The right answer to a non problem is to have the courage to do nothing," Monckton told participants.

"The UN conference is a complete waste of our time and your money and we should no longer pay the slightest attention to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,)" Monckton added. (LINK)

Monckton also noted that the UN has not been overly welcoming to the group of skeptical scientists.

"UN organizers refused my credentials and appeared desperate that I should not come to this conference. They have also made several attempts to interfere with our public meetings," Monckton explained.

Evans, a mathematician who did carbon accounting for the Australian government, recently converted to a skeptical scientist about man-made global warming after reviewing the new scientific studies. (LINK)

"We now have quite a lot of evidence that carbon emissions definitely don't cause global warming. We have the missing [human] signature [in the atmosphere], we have the IPCC models being wrong and we have the lack of a temperature going up the last 5 years," Evans said in an interview with the Inhofe EPW Press Blog. Evans authored a November 28 2007 paper "Carbon Emissions Don't Cause Global Warming."

Evans touted a new peer-reviewed study by a team of scientists appearing in the December 2007 issue of the International Journal of Climatology of the Royal Meteorological Society which found "Warming is naturally caused and shows no human influence."

"Most of the people here have jobs that are very well paid and they depend on the idea that carbon emissions cause global warming. They are not going to be very receptive to the idea that well actually the science has gone off in a different direction," Evans explained.

UN IPCC reviewer and climate researcher Dr. Vincent Gray of New Zealand, an expert reviewer on every single draft of the IPCC reports since its inception going back to 1990, had a clear message to UN participants.

"There is no evidence that carbon dioxide increases are having any affect whatsoever on the climate," Gray, who shares in the Nobel Prize awarded to the UN IPCC, explained.

"All the science of the IPCC is unsound. I have come to this conclusion after a very long time. If you examine every single proposition of the IPCC thoroughly, you find that the science somewhere fails," Gray, who wrote the book "The Greenhouse Delusion: A Critique of "Climate Change 2001," said.

"It fails not only from the data, but it fails in the statistics, and the mathematics," he added.

the full linked text is an interesting read because it actually provides additional links that show real research that backs their claims

all the best,

Wow, corporations and energy companies have been very successful at creating doubt in this country, haven't they? The evidence is overwhelming, the science is sound, there is photographic evidence, empirical evidence, ice core sample evidence, and resounding international agreement on the reality of Global Warming, and yet because of propaganda, there is still doubt in the United States about it's validity.

There is no question, there is no argument to be made, it's real, it's happening, it's our fault, and it's our opportunity to create new & better technologies for the advancement of humankind.

Over 100 posts and no one seems interested in what actual climatologists have to say.

But in case there's someone who might be interested, here's a link to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (although the influx of genuine scientific information seems to have bogged down the similar thread in the Lobby).

I can't believe that anyone can't believe that when you screw with a ecosystem in a major way, like on Earth that it's not going to cause changes or have effects- Blame who or what you want

Life will go on here on earth, the question is how long humans will go on. Cockroaches will remain supreme!!!

I've attended a lecture of an alpinist who reached the summit of Everest, among other achievements. He mostly talked about technical stuff, but at the end he was asked about the global warming. He said: "Although I'm not a pro, I have no doubts about it. When I come back to mountains I've already been on, I frequently see that there's significantly less ice on them. Anyone saw the famous photo of the snow hat of Kilimanjaro? Forget about it".
I tend to believe him.

"Dr. Vincent Gray:

Dr. Vincent Gray is a coal researcher. A search of 22,000 academic journals shows that Gray has never been published in a peer-reviewed journal on the subject of climate change. Gray has published peer-reviewed scientific work on coal with the last article being published 17 years ago."

So, is this typical of the other scientists the UN chose for the IPCC?

Too bad most of the stuff in threads like this are about discrediting your opponent and saying LOOKIT ME!!! I'M RITE I'M RITE!!

Truth be told: I don't know what the cause of this alleged Global Warming is. I really don't have the time to study it either. This is why we rely on experts. There a lot of "well read up on it". Sorry, don't have the time. Work must get done and I'd like to spend time with my family additionally, I've got to get my Christmas shopping done soon as well.

What I do know is that if it exists, I can do NOTHING about it.

If it's man-made I'm one of billions and billions of people whatever "good" I can do is less than a drop in the bucket.

If it's man-made and irreversible (as some of the pro-Global Warming people claim), then I can do nothing about it.

If it's part of the natural cycle of the Earth, then I can do nothing about it.

...Or humanity at large can still try to reduce the crap we let out into the world regardless of whether global warming is real or not.

Look at it this way, you stick a tube in the exhaust of a running car and suck on it for a while, what happens? You die. Hmmmm... Maybe there's some harmful stuff in there, huh? Might be a good idea to keep that out of our atmosphere.

I agree with everything you've said, here.

There's too much hysteria being whipped up by too many people (on every possible "side") and it isn't healthy.

The biggest loser is science and its reputation.
