Is global warming fake?

Global warming is dangerous for the planet. It's a simple factual statement. If you see it as hysterical, that's your problem.

This is hysterical.

What's this supposed to prove?

You asked about the hysteria. I showed it to you.

That if you go to websites like celticsurf.net instead of getting your information straight from credible sources, you'll be more afraid? Touche, I guess.

Nope, but your response is typical of someone who's point has been refuted.

Unless, of course, Global Warming is the next step in Evolution. Then there is little we can do about it, eh?

A central claim of the anthropogenic global warming hypothesis is that the net 1/2 degree Celcius rise in temperature over the last century is unprecedented in geologic history, that such a rise in temperature has never been so large, so suddenly.

That is grossly false, as there are abundant examples of much larger changes in temperature (both rising and falling) occuring in the geologic record on all time scales that are well studied by climatologists, and the natural causes for these changes are understood by category, if not by detail.

Example is the Younger Dryas of 14,500 years ago.

caused by a natural change in ocean currents that precipitated a 10 degree C rise in temperature during a decade.

Hoax or not, the science is certainly being misrepresented in the press, and this doesn't advance the cause of those who need to meet the burden of proof. They will need to isolate the variable of CO2 from fossil fuel burning from all the natural variables that are known to affect climate change.

The key to this debate for me is that we have nothing to lose by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy sources. We can only gain for the future. I personally agree that the earth has cycles, but that doesn't mean that human actions can't AUGMENT a cycle to the point where it upsets the Earth's ecological balance.

the thing is, before i posted the op, there was a thing i saw (or it may have been in the articles)

in the last century, the earth's temperature has risen 1/2 degree Celsius... at the end of the last ice age, the temperature rose 10-15 degrees in a decade.... so, how does that make al gore's temperature graph true?

Tell that to the REAL PEOPLE who will lose REAL JOBS, because of some government imposed regulation to reduce our dependence (which it won't) on fossil fuels. I love it when people call for others to sacrifice. That requires courage.:hmm:

The World Economy runs on fossil fuel and at this point the only alternative is Nuclear. If we (the west) quit using fossil fuel tomorrow China will make up for it in ten years. And No alternative energy source is available at even close to the same cost. Environmentalist are trying to drive up the cost of fossil fuel to limit use. The problem is with no alternative all they do is make it harder for the middle class to pay the bills. I don't see Al Gore taking any less private plane rides.

The facts are this, the Climate is changing. But if we study even recent history we will see that it has changed before. Many historians believe that much of the world was warmer then it is today in the 1300's. And the climate change we are seeing now is a warming out of a mini ice age in the 16-1700's which got so bad that Lake Superior was frozen enough to cross in June of 1608. Is man contributing? Perhaps, I actually believe he is. But we frankly can't prove it. And even if we can a dozen Kyoto's want change it.

1) We have no idea what the normal or optimal temperature for the planet is

2) While Greenland and the Arctic ice caps are shrinking the Antarctic Ice cap is getting thicker. And Greenland had no ice as late as 1300, and somehow the planet still survived.

3) While the water levels may rise 20" as the soothsayers claim (they really DON'T know). In the last 150 years water level have already risen 18" and somehow the planet survived.

4) While human deaths may increase because of warmer weather we need to remember that cold causes death too. In fact far more people die every year from winter weather related deaths, then heat wave related deaths. It only goes to figure their will be less cold deaths.

5) Polar Bear populations are not threatened, in fact they have been steadily increasing since they were endangered in the 70's. The world population then was 5000, it is now around 27,000.

6) Glaciers have proceeded and receded thru out History. there are many glaciers in Norway that weren't even on the maps in the 1400's

7) Many of the same scientist that are promoting Global Warming today were promoting Global cooling in the 1970's. Of course the solution was always the same, give government more regulatory power and limit fossil fuel use.

Is it myth? Who knows? Not the scientist who can't get the weather right for tomorrow. Not the prognosticators who promised that every Hurricane season would get worse after Katrina, and attribute EVERY weather event to Global Warming. If they didn't lie constantly to sell this thing I might consider their arguments. Credibility is something the GW prophets just don't have.:rollno:

Climate change, eh?

I have been reading the past few days that the ice cover in the southern hemisphere is above normal. Here is a site where you can compare the cover from 2005, 2006, and 2007, and you can see that 2007 is substantially ahead of the past 2 years.

Also, according to a couple of stories that I read, the northern hemisphere's ice cover, which is in such a recessive state that polar bears are dieing out, and Greenland will be green enough to grow grain crops any year now, is within 1% of normal. That is one good winter snowstorm away from a FULL RECOVERY to normal.

Maybe the new Ice Age really is coming!

I am ahead of the curve. I am starting an organization to politicize global warming in Mars.

The hole in the ozone layer is a totally different issue.

Does anyone remember a British anti-GW video? It debunked a lot of Al Gore's theories. The main premise is that Al Gore's chart of CO2 vs. temperature was correct, but that it was temperature controlling carbon dioxide and not the other way around, and the sun controlling temperature. For those who have taken chem, this makes some sense... increase the temperature and the ocean, the main contributer of CO2, will release more CO2 due to Le Chatelier's principle.

I think the main reason we're calling it "climate change" now instead of "global warming" is so that anything unusual can be pinned on fossil fuels. After all, we don't know where this is all going... so a record number of hurricanes, an unusually cold winter, a heat wave or a drought can all be used as evidence even if one idea conflicts with another. Feral cats giving birth in the fall? Must be due to something in the weather... something that has changed, even if it isn't due to global warming.

How dare you bring scientific proof, facts, and logic into this debate?:spit:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7139797.stm

further proof that no one has any clue whats going on... look at the timeline thing that shows the melt of the polar ice cap and think of this... if the earth has been getting progressively warmer for the last century, then why is it that 1996 is more frozen than any other ones, and why is it that miraculously once it hit 2000 the melting sped up...

wait... i have a new theory!

Y2K wasn't a computer crash at all! it was when the planet started trying to kill everyone!
