Is In-n-Out Burger THIS good?

They had this burger called the kitchen sink if I remember right, and it had pretty much everything they served on it. So good.

It keeps closing and re-opening Mike. I think it may be closed again right now. I used to stop in there once in a while on my way to work near Bonneville Dam.

I was talking about the fad that was Krispy Kreme, nothing to do with their longevity as a business.

Fact is, maybe 10 years ago, Krispy Kreme became really popular in SoCal (probably other places as well). Everyone wanted some. Not long after, the fad went away and KK went back to business as usual.

My comment to lunarpollen's post, is that In-N-Out has had that similar fad-like reputation for a very long time, thus negating the use of the word fad. Fads are something that come and go (like the popularity of KK), whereas INO has had a long run of being popular.

So, I went to Five Guys for lunch today. Not bad, I must say, but not as good as INO.

Burgerwise, being a vegetarian, they had 3 options. Veggie Sandwich, Cheese Veggie Sandwich, and Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I had the Cheese Veggie Sandwich, whish was just a cheeseburger without the meat. Similar to INO's Grilled Cheese (chesseburger sans meat). The bread seemed fresh, the veggies were good (grilled mushrooms comes standard, cool! and lots of toppings to boot!), but INO wins for taste and cheese content.

The fries, this is where Five Guys really takes the cake. I dont know if theyre cut in-store, but they taste great. Not too different than INOs, except for being much thicker. For $3 you get a taco bell sized small soda cup filled with fries, though when you look in the bag it seems as though there are two or three times as many!

Also, I appreciate any fast food joint that carries Cherry Cola.

As far as the atmosphere, I didnt like it too much. The place was very busy, probably because its new, but just as busy as INO at lunch time, though it was very noisy. I couldnt hear them call my number, and the place seemed overcrowded.

Total cost was $8.50 for sandwich, fries, and drink. The same costs me about $5 at INO.
I wouldnt mind going back, though, especially for those fries (and once the novelty wears off and theyre not quite so busy).

Thats all I was trying to say.

I live just a few miles from In-N-Out University (there is such a place), Im pretty sure fads dont get institutionalized, though I may end up eating my words.

matticus.. i almost went to the burger place known as five guys.. couldn't find a parking spot so i skipped. but, how convenient... in & out is drive thru! went to in & out because of this darn thread.

and it was freakin awesome!!!!! no fries, just a double double w lettuce & onion. no sauce so as to really taste the meat. for a quick joint, i must say it was really really good. :D

In n Out isn't even close to top 10 for me and the fries are horrible. Adding grease doesn't really make a burger better for me. I won't go back. 5 Guys has a better burger and the fries, way better.

I DO like that I&O pays their managers about $150K to start. My friend's parents each manage one which explains the better customer service.

The only local hyped burger that really lived up to it was Hodad's in OB. Legendary, and now too crowded thanks to that Diners n Drive in show.

+1 for Whattaburger (spelling?) in TX.

ha.. we rehearse right behind hodad's at Spotless. I love the smells coming out of there.. Always a line, especially on wednesdays when the farmer's market is going on. I just sold a cab to Mike's son Shane a few weeks back..

Krispy Kreme has had a similar fad-like reputation in the south for a very long time, yet it doesn't negate that it was a fad for the majority of the country.

In-N-Out will never be just a fad in California (just like Krispy Kreme will never be just a fad in the south) - but that says nothing of what will happen with their expansion. They could be a boom/bust fad outside California just as Krispy Kreme has been outside the south.

Apparently they've been having long lines too. There used to be a place down the street from there called Gangsta Burger. The Gangsta didn't see anywhere near the success of the Fat Ho. I'm sure that once all the white folks in Waco have gone to Fat Ho and had their picture taken for their Facebook page the popularity will die down.
