I consider myself to be quite a Rickenbacker fan boy. I have now amassed a collection of 11 basses and 1 guitar from them, including this...thing.... As much as I love their instruments, some times their lack of flair leaves something to be desired. So I was lucky to find a 2006 Jetglo 4003 that was a factory blemish. Apparently the finish didn't cure correctly and it turned into a gummy mess and then the case stuck to it. It was quite a mess and needed some love to get back into tip top shape. Black is boring though, I have 2 Jetglo 4003s already, this had the opportunity to be something more.

I recently saw the limited edition Babuik Candy Apple Purple 4003 and while I loved the idea, it wasn't enough. It needed more flake! More purple! More racing stripes! After about of a month of work and multiple layers of paint, flake, and clear I finally finished this crazy creation! I think it's very cool. I might not have gone with the racing stripes myself but I'd have darn sure gone with the silver binding. But that's just me.

but you gotta replace the god awful bridge tailpiece mechanical mute thing and remove the terrible pickup cover

I don't know about "purist" but definitely fan, although my collection is far more modest than yours and may get smaller by one at some point here and my only "claim"...

... is that I went a little bit when I saw all that beautiful hard work and no v2 bridge.
I have recently gone back to the cover myself recently and found I play the instrument more with it on, surprisingly enough. But, this is the one I may sell too. However, none of this matters because....
