Hey Jeff,
I just wanted to say thanks.
You may not remember but I met you at a clinic at Ace Music just before you opened the players school. At the time I had only been playing the bass for about 5 years. I was already studying theory and beginning to learn to read.
There were a few things that you were demonstrating that really opened the flood gates for me. I had never used a metronome but still managed to always be in the pocket (although that could have more to do with growing up in SoFla and being around latin music).
But it wasn't until you pointed out how you felt about relying on a metronome and how it can handicap you that I started to realize that I was on the right path. This prompted me to study some of Paul Hindemiths work on reading rhthyms.
The other thing that stuck was how you apply harmony to the instrument. It forced me to look at the instrument from a composers view as opposed to a bass players view. This lead me to reading music that was written for every instrument other than the bass (Beethoven, paganini, chopin, coltrane, tatum and even zappa among others).
I was always a broke musician and I could never afford lessons, school, a metronome, or even a tuner. I just had a lot of determination, an open mind and a hunger for understanding the language of music.
I apologize for the long post but I just wanted to say that despite all the criticism that Jeff has received, his approach to learning and understanding music is way ahead of most. So thank you Jeff for doing what you do and being honest about it. The world needs more musical minds like you.

I am so happy that you got something beneficial at my clinic. Regarding the criticism that I receive, I only get it from people who don't know about music and the benefits that it can give to you. In the movie “Inherit the Wind”, teacher Bert Kates taught evolution instead of creationism and the townspeople were furious with him for doing this. Bert Kates said, “They act as if I’m a murderer!” His lawyer Henry Drummond responded, “In a way you are! If you kill one of their fairy tale notions, they’ll bring the wrath of God, and the State Legislature down on you every time!”
Oh Yes They Will! And they are right here in music as well!
Jeff, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge here on talkbass. It was after watching your latest dvd that I really started working on the fundamentals. I gave up tab and am learning to read music. I've been tuning my bass by ear, and also learning songs by ear. I started out late on the bass, at age 25( i'm 27 now), and feel i'm starting to get somewhere. Thank You.

Moderators here are sometimes hypocrites! There are still posts on your threads that attack me personally. Not a word from the moderators against this. There is still a post from the other day that is still on the thread Jeff Berlin Per Your Request! No moderator removed it. No moderator condemned it. You are being hypocrities and you are not letting me appear on an even playing field.
I invited that guy to come back and join us and you still took down the post. Why? I invited him back. I'm getting tired of this nonsense. Play fair. Also, leave this post alone and while you are at it, go around and take down the pointed comments that are on Talkbass. If you guys really played fair, then I wouldn't be writing this. Got it?
I'm not sure how much longer I will be here. If the moderators don't hold some in check as they ask me to do, then I am in an unfair situation. I am waiting to see what will come of my comment.
Jeff - If you were to leave it'd be a significant loss to so many of us here. You give your time (something i guess is your most highly prized posession) free of charge in the hope of improving us as players.
I seriously hope you find the circumstances tenable.

I don't know how you expect us to be there every minute to nab every post. We also do have a life outside talkbass, like every body else.
If YOU have a problem, report the post as opposed to calling us hypocrites.
Also, I would make myself more familiar with the rules here on Talkbass (Specifically Rule #5)
Seriuosly Guys - are we really going to lose contact with one of the greatest bass players on earth just because others refuse to butt out whenever Jeff's involved ?

I was researching a gentleman named Kirk McWhorter, who once played in a band that I really enjoy called Kilbrannan. I noticed that he has a recording studio near my home town, and in looking at his credits, I saw "Jeff Berlin". One and the same? And, if so, what material did you record with him? Thanks for enlightening all of us, and please hang in there with us!

Moderators respond to reported posts and make an assessment. Sometimes they make a decision by themselves, sometimes they confer among themselves. They do not read every post of every thread. If you see something that breaks the forum rules. please report it. When you do so, understand that moderators and admins do not comment about action taken against any particular member with anyone except the member in question and other moderators, so it is not a safe assumption to assume that nothing has been done when a rule is broken.
Commenting on moderator actions in an open thread is a direct violation of the following rule from the forum rules:
To make a basketball analogy, it's the equivalent of shoving a ref while arguing a call. It's best to avoid doing this in the public forums.
So in short, please report posts that you feel may be breaking the rules, and understand that any action taken may not be apparent to anyone but the mods and the specific poster involved.
129,269. But, I am one who can be directly insulted and I am the one who can be found and correctly by moderators in this group. It is up to you guys to make things right by me because I took a lot of B.S. over here with the moderators' permission, it seems, or else you would have stopped these guys months ago.
I won't comment anymore about this. Just get your (collective) act together and treat me like you are treating other guys over here. Being contrvertial doesn't give you permission to let guys take personal shots at me because NOT ONE OF YOU has intervened on my behalf when guys took their comments to the next levels. Rule #5? Here's my Rule #1. Treat me as you wish to be treated.

Well said! Spoken like a gentleman. Just realize that guys here have taken really personal shots at me, off the musical topics at hand, and practiclly no moderator intervened in my behalf. You guys should be honest and know that, as a group, you let a lot of guys take their turns getting personal with me and loads of Talkbass members also know this as well. It is no secret and it was all within the moderator's control to do something about it. They didn't and in some cases probably agreed with the tone of the comments said about me, because they it let it go on! If the moderators don't see the bad job that they sometimes did on my behalf, then I will mention it so that you, as a group might take the time to make sure that it doesn't happen to me anymore over here.
