I want to share a trick with you guys.

I think we all agree that Monique has only one big annoying defect: the blue light is much too bright. It makes it impossible to make a nice picture of Monique when the power is on; And what's the point of owning Monique if you can't show your beautifull glowing tubes to the world?

So I removed the light cover, inserted a piece of white toilet paper to reduce the brightness and put back the cover, and here we go, problem solved!

I’d just like to say, it’s been a few years since I bought my Monique..and that the more I use it, the more I appreciate it. I recently purchased the Trickfish Bullhead 1K which is also an amazing amp. That I will be using that as my backup, should tell you something.

Essential items.
For a while now I've been using the LED version of the #47 bulb (that's the part name for what you have). Much prettier. More a blue "ambiance" than glaring. This pic is from Ebay. $4 for all of them. Shouldn't be a fire hazard. Order the blue ones.

Upgraded to an Apollo X8p and have been shooting out the unison preamp plugins, Monique, DIs vs HiZ input, mic’d cab. Endless combinations, really gravitating towards Monique into the V76 and the NV115 with a warm audio FET47. Although if you have to lose the mic’d cab a little pultec EQ and DBX160, LA2A or Fairchild will fatten it up a bit.

Lessons learned, the HIZ input doesn’t stink, the Motown DI is really good. Any combination of high end preamps can be killer. Don’t love the ampeg plug-ins but the SVT is more usable than the b15. Both are okay as second track to fatten things up much like using the real mic’d cab.

It is pretty subtle but Monique gives that little 1% more that’s missing in the rest. While it’s not a lock on every tune Monique tends to be the best choice more times than not.

Depends. Is the 1600W rating RMS, Mechanical, or Program, and do you expect to actually push the cab to the limit.

Think of RMS as the average amount of power the voice coil can dissipate. Music is dynamic so the power level fluctuates. Program power is 2X the RMS rating. The idea is the driver can handle short bursts of power that are double the RMS rating, but the average power must fall equal to, or below than the RMS rating, or the voiced coil will overheat and burn out.

Mechanical power handling is probably more important for bass. Many bass cabs will run out of excursion at certain frequencies below 100hz long before the power level reaches the RMS rating. Mechanical power handling is determined by driver characteristics and how the cab is tuned. If you have two dissimilar cabs that use the same driver, they will have different mechanical power handling limits. Unfortunately, most companies do not publish any data related to their cabs mechanical power handling. The only exception I know of is the Mesa Subway line.

Even if you don't plan to push the cab super hard, a really big power amp still present some degree of risk. If there is an event that accidently causes the amp to produce a huge transient, it may push the driver beyond Xmax enough to cause mechanical damage. The bigger the amp, the more likely this is.
