I am of the opinion that poweramps don't colour sound substantially.
Think it's less an issue of direct coloration from a dedicated power amp and maybe more a match up between I/O impedance between nonvariable gain stages?

Sure. But when comparing properly matched poweramps that are of similar power, I don't personally see much of a difference. I am assuming one doesn't have an input sensitivity of 0.775V and the other 1.4V, etc.Think it's less an issue of direct coloration from a dedicated power amp and maybe more a match up between I/O impedance between nonvariable gain stages?
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.
I've read through the entire thread (a couple days later) and have a quick question from 40 pages back or so
In the thread, the interaction with a passive instrument and the sensitivity knob being much more noticeable than when using a passive instrument vs buffered/active signal came up in regards to Kjung's Nordy VP5- several others also chimed in. I believe people were finding a huge change when they specifically removed their Fdecks from their signal chain.... The end of it was something along the lines of the amp sees a buffered signal coming off the fdeck, the line is effectively an active line.
My question is something along the lines of - do all pedals affect the signal in a similar way and buffer the signal, effectively creating a buffered/'active' line to the preamp and take out some of that sensitivity mojo?
Looking for an excuse to make my way down to Santa Cruz for some time in one of my favorite cities- along with placing an order likely for the Tardis Monique 700... (though if that power amp comes out as a solo unit by then I may be in trouble.)
Intrigued. Recording comparisons would be nice if its not too much trouble. Some follow-up testing with Steubig in the house today. We went back and forth using Monique as the front end, H1203 and TC112 cabs (both by themselves and in combination), and swapping the Minnie and M700. Bottom line is that they sound different - and fairly significant depending on how picky you are. At the risk of tonal descriptions:
M700 - more extended highs, more open sounding. Maybe a bit "quicker", and enable harmonics to speak effortlessly.
Minnie - more lower mid push, less open highs, more compressed
I think if I were playing a rock gig, Minnie might get the nod as it is a tad thicker and a bit more punch. The M700 is a bit more "hi fi" to my ear. Form factor depends on what you like. Minnie certainly is smaller (both are about the same weight). I think I'm likely going to run the M700 and probably sell Minnie and just find something cheap as a backup amp. Steuart will likely chime in with his thoughts.
