Jule Amps Monique Part III

I just had some cats over for a audition and used Monique
in context for the first time.....
Huevos Grandes
The tone was all studio pumping out the Monique/thunderchild
combo.

I know there is gear of the month and waxing poetic. Monique is some serious stuff. I hear the SVT V4B B-15 comparisons while I personally hear the Hiwatt Sunn 2000s McIntosh tube Marshall Super Lead 100 comparisons. Was Jule just designing guitar amps while listening to our prayers wishes dreams? Then in a tempest of inspiration he finds the best components and brings us a pre that is so fat that you don't notice what it's plugged into? Here is a pre that makes you think your SS power amp is fat power tubes. You think this is crazy? I know. Play Monique and find out. :)

Here's how I'm enjoying my Monique (double posted at Verellen). I go from my bass to a splitter. One signal goes to the Verellen and into the return of the Carvin BX500 (500 watts) and into a BRX 2x10 Neo for the drive channel. The other goes to the Monique and into the return of the Carvin BX1200 (1200 watts) and into a BRX 4x10 for the clean channel. I love this setup. FWIW, the bass is a Bluesman Vintage Slab Precision (inspired by the 1966 Fenders in the UK) - it's amazing as well. Thanks!

Could I get a heads up on the EQ centers?

Did a little floundering looking for upper mid metal "cut" at practice the other day... basically a standard "perfect in home studio = not so much in band mix" deal. Didn't have much time to twiddle & listen, either. I missed my numerical shortcuts, too used to dialing a pile of parametrics and knowing exactly what everything is doing. :)

Just ordered my Dove Cage Monique - hope Jule can include my order in the April 28th shipment. Also ordered the CPAP (some kind of respiratory equipment) case that Baird6869 suggested.

This is the last piece in my light but monstrous bass rig set up ( I hope!!). My back and knees certainly appreciate the moves I've made over the past while ;)

Has anyone landed a De-Monique Tardis yet? This is a very sweet looking package. What is the weight and would the line out be suitable to drive a set of headphones? Just wondering if you could do silent practice with this unit?

I'm also curious how this compares with the GB Streamliner 900 and Orange BT500H. I've enjoyed my Streamliner for some time now and really like a good tube tone best for its warmth, harmonic richness, and feel. I've read both the Orange and De-Monique are a bit tighter in the lows with more mid presence than the Streamliner. I really like the sound clips on the Orange web site and they are a pretty good cross section of the tones I like. The Terror BT500H can be had used for around $600 but the DI seems to be its weak point and it seems more limited in its tonal range; still very good at what it does. The Streamliner has an excellent set of features at a reasonable price point (~$650 used) and a tube swap in position 1 can re-bias the low/mid balance for tighter lows and more mid presence. I haven't heard anything the De-Monique doesn't do well. The $2000 price point is the major hurdle but elite quality doesn't come cheap. The sound of Monique seems to be like crack to bass tone junkies so I'm wondering, for those who do have the means, what is it about the sound of a De-Monique that separates it from the pack?

I own 2 Moniques (none with the Demeter power amp).

In any case, the De-Monique is fairly pricy, but in the same range as a Mesa M9 and most of the 200-300W tube amps out there. Not out of line for what it is.

Personally, I can't justify a $800-1000 poweramp and run my Moniques with Crown and Crest poweramps.

For a less pricy solution that completely kicks ass, I bought a rack Monique, a 2000w (bridged) rack Crest poweramp and a 4U gator rack. The poweramp was $359 new and the total package was in the $1500 range. It weighs 20-25lbs total.

Many run Monique with the power section of their existing amps too. This works extremely well.

Jule! You are a baaaadddd man!

Just got monique in and fired her up. OMG! Don't even know where to begin... just unreal. I actually ended up cutting a little bass and having the tone I wanted without robbing the low end..the EQ on this is just ridiculous. Heck, I flattened my Mike Pope preamp on the bass and put the pickup blend on center and was able to get everything I needed!

But as other people have said...the sensitvity knob is where it is at. It is sooo musical at any setting! I hate presence knobs and such on almost every amp...but this just sounds soo good. It adds clarity, but also punch! all while still being smooth. Man, I can't wait to play this for a while. You sir, are a master!

And the Bamboo enclosure is just insanely nice!

Yes, the Baxandall is by no means parametric. Sounds and plays beautifully, but not linearly arithmetic. I wish I had invented it. Alas, it came from the brilliant mind of Peter Baxandall in 1952. Numbers would help us remember where we were, but would otherwise give incorrect impressions.

I expect there are others using Monique who can now suggest better than I, but I would think you'd have to take down some of the high and mid both to get where you want.

By design, there is some overlap (mids) between the high and mid EQ knobs. Not so with the Low.

Monique isn't really a numbers kind of girl. Play with the knobs until it sounds good. Don't be afraid to be radical with the eq, but if you're expecting surgical precision you're going to be disappointed. Monique is an instrument rather than a box with knobs to be twiddled. The real action is the interplay between fingers/strings/bass and the sensitivity knob. The eq is more like salt/pepper to taste. It's not going to change meat into fish.

If I can suggest, the eq. of the Monique does what you wish. More of this dial it, less, dial it. Just a little goes a very long way. You'll be pleasantly surprised that it responds just like that while never sounding bad. Flat is straight up. Start there and reach for what you want. This eq. is intuitive and musical.

Monique's tone control centres sound great IME for most rooms. I might boost treble and/or mids from time to time, but nothing crazy. The Monique has 20db of cut/boost on each bass, treble and mids and the controls are not interactive. HUGE tonal range.:bassist:

The Sensitivity control IMO is what makes Monique so cool/different. It won't give you super distorted, but really cool drive and cleans.

I personally don't fiddle much with this amp. I adjust only to suit different rooms, nothing else.
