Just because Jaco is cool

One good thing about being my age is I saw Jaco live, both with Weather Report and Joni Mitchell. WOW. I also saw Stanley Clarke, Percy Jones with Brand X and Jeff Berlin with Bruford. These are my favorite jazzy guys. They were all different.
Bruford is an absolute monster. :)

WHOA! Macgyver plays bass!!!

I saw him playing the blue one with Hyram Bullock at Jonathan Swift's in Cambridge,MA early '86.

Wow - that is timely that you saw him then. I saw him the first few months after joining Weather Report. I just recall him dressed all in white (his Florida kit) and shuffling around the stage as he played. Bill Milkowski's book revealed his talc-powder stage routine that aided his shuffle.

i have seen pics of the broken bass- it was a basket case and the fact that it even played was a miracle, but the burst is awful
and putting on a decorative top? did he play it much after the rebuild? if not i can understand....

I'm going to guess that back then Jaco probably thought it was really really cool even if he didn't really like the figured top - his trusted partner in crime in shards and splinters was resurrected into a playable instrument. A real Frankenstein! Those who have played it more recently since it's return say it 'speaks'. Looks are so superficial.
