Just thought I'd say something...

If I'm getting paid, I'm going to try to look *professional. If not, I don't. Simple.

I can watch people that look like bums perform great music for free at any given jam session. Plus the side show at the jams is usually better, too.

* This can be tricky. Many genres have "implicit" costuming rules that in no way conform to societal norms. I.e, don't dress punk for a country gig, but it's OK to dress country for a punk gig.

....getting ready for a gig...and I'm going to wear shorts. Might add in a pair white new balance and a Hawaiian shirt. Just thought I'd drop a talkbass bomb before I went tout the door.

Does it matter that it is a Hawaiian themed bar?

Discuss.

You know, there are some members here that have some definite opinions on this subject that will insist the even wearing shorts on a gig at the gates of hell is unacceptable.

All the more reason to adopt the Parrothead look. Don't wear new tennis shoes. Opt for old shoes, docksiders, flip flops, etc. Look like you've done this before. I do that at my summer lake gigs. Then again, I'm 60 years old and I can do it authentically.

Hopefully you're also overweight, balding*, wear a goatee to delineate your chin from your neck, extremely pink, and wearing a beige trilby.

Otherwise you'll be outing yourself as a haole.

* - important for the third set when you take off the hat and need to blind the audience with the light reflected off your sweaty scalp. It also helps if you put on 3D glasses a la Dr. Jacoby from Twin Peaks.
