Ken Lawrence "Joust" 11-string

That's a C# from the Hideous Claw... unfortunately, the string is about an inch too long (the claw is 36" scale, Joust is 35"), so Ken used the F# tuning post as a sort of pulley - the string is actually in the C# tuning post (and can be tuned with it), it's just looped around the F# post to keep the thick part from going on the tuner and snapping the string. Should have a Joust C# string this week. hahaha nothing broken.

I'm surprised you guys didn't notice it in the picture where I'm holding it. ;)

Congrats to you and Ken on a beautiful bass and welcome to the exclusive 11-string bass club of greater North America! I am sure you will be doing some remarkable things with it. I am relieved that you and Ken decided on the C#0 tuning!

Luis just meant that it was Jean's first fanned fret bass that had angled pickups.

All others fanned frets basses that Jeans owns are fitted with non-angled pickups.

I guess there are only 3.Not really popular those 11-strings. Strings are always an issue. I don't really play my 11-string anymore,mainly the 12.It's not how many strings you use,but the span in octaves that you prefer to use. I think we are all happy for Jean.Ken made a beautiful bass. Just give Jean some time to play around with it and I am sure he'll post some cool audio.

you guys are hillarious. Liz actually plays a small part in the mystery of the hideous claw, which part? and why does she have the h.claw strings around her neck?! 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42... Stay tuned next week, when instead of answers you only get more questions.

Thanks Garry for the compliments. No Jared, KL wouldn't be making the hideous claw. Lokire, I switched the tuning to sync this bass with the other 11s... I'll save the high string for JP's Sheep!

And shame on all of you, I should be practicing right now... no interent for me.

That is a beautiful instrument. Right when I saw the bass and then the clip of you playing Bach, something occured to me. I would guess physically not all people could play this bass. However, if the envelope of ERB and solo bass playing continues to grow in its scope it would seem that having this instrument designed as a lap guitar might open up its appeal to those who could not play it as a typical guitar. Tapping would resemble a piano type technique and fingerstyle would still be possible as well as slap all with slightly modified technique. Weight would also be less of an issue.

Why I even care I am not sure, because I do not think I will ever go beyond a six (I haven't gone beyond five yet).

Is that a "blistered ebony" fingerboard, Jean? This is what I have on my chambered MTD 535 ("Marilyn #3"). You can't see the fingerboard all that well in this shot, but currently, it's the best that I have.

To me, blistered ebony really plays tricks on the eye, where it seems at first like it just has a number of extreme wear spots on the board. Someone else described it as being akin to looking up at a star-filled sky. Either way, I like it!
